Joy Spring was the first song of Clifford's I ever heard. Back in '87. That same summer I went to the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag Holland and saw Miles, Diz, Oscar Peterson, and many others as well as the Manhattan Transfer covering Joy Spring... Awesome song. By far my favorite Clifford song.

The real secret to improving is listening. I don't even need to know what key it is and be playing something meaningful within 3 seconds. Maybe some people are born with near perfect pitch but my has been developed through doing as much listening as possible.

Thanks for all the help guys. One more question: When chords are listed on the page, and there is nothing to indicate either way, are those the actual chords (as in concert pitches), or have they been transposed for my instrument?

If the written part of your chart has been transposed, then most likely the chords will have been transposed also. In other words, if you're reading a part written for Bb trumpet in your big band, then I can almost guarantee that the chords will be written for Bb trumpet.

I agree with Miles. But if you want to be one-hundred percent sure check to see if the chords written out make sense with the music written, If the chord is F minor, and the music below consistently resolves to G...and it sounds good...guess what!

Or look at the bass player's music
