About a year ago I had the pleasure of meeting the 2nd trumpeter in the Sun Ra band. He sat in during a rehearsal of my big band. Not much of a sight reader but he could definitely play. His solo wasn't exactly 'jazz' per se but considering my ineptitude at playing an ad-lib solo, his was pretty good by comparison.

At about that same time I met a young lady at work who says her father is (was?) the 1st trumpeter with Sun Ra.

Small world, eh? Anyone know the names of these two trumpeters?

Not sure who's with the Sun Ra (ghost) Arkestra now, but Michael Ray played the high parts for some years in Ra's late period. With a career that goes back to the 1950s, a lot of trumpet players passed through the band.

Ahmed Abdullah played with Sun Ra for many years, and Hobart Dotson was a brilliant player in the late '50s-early 60s era.

If you remember the names of the players you mention, let us know!

My favorite Sun Ra recording is "Fate In A Pleasant Mood"; the trumpets are George Hudson and Phil Cohran, c. 1960. It's a more "inside" Ra record, Very humable...
An interesting sidenote, the Govenor of Massachusetts is Deval Patrick, son of Pat Patrick, a longtime member of the Arkestra! (Pat didn't raise Deval though...)

I know Kelly Rossum played with the Arkestra a little bit this summer, but I don't think he does that regularly.

There is an excellent Sun Ra documentary on Amazon Prime. The trumpet section is an amalgamation of Bb, flugel, cornet & bass trumpet (?).
SOMEONE in there (must be the Bb player) is quite the screamer!
