Someone I know (no, it is not ME!) that is aware of the whole Starkel situation saw his show this weekend. He emailed me a report just for interest.

The trumpet CDs were not for sale. He asked someone in the band if they were available and was told that they were out of stock. He also asked people why Starkel's website is down. They said they were not sure why, but it had something to do with copyright issues.

Starkel did fake a few tunes where he didn't actually play, but the fellow thinks that they were not pirated recordings by Doc, Maynard, or others. He also appeared to be faking it on keyboard some of the time, but with sound only coming out of speakers, it was hard to tell for sure.

No "scream box" was used during this show, probably because none of the Severinsen or Ferguson recordings were played. However, he mentioned that there were times where Starkel faced completely sideways and faked playing a herald trumpet into a mic during rendetions of Bill Chase solos. The fellow was certain that no sound was coming out of Starkel's bell, but he wasn't sure if the trumpet playing heard from the speakers was Chase, or maybe pre-recorded by Starkel himself.

Starkel played on a trumpet (a Destino, I think?) that he claimed Doc Severinsen gave him after his last concert tour. He also played a different trumpet that he claimed Al Hirt gave him as a present. He also played a trumpet supposedly given to him by Bill Chase.

I received today yet another email from someone (who I am not sure who it is because the email name is not likely his/her real name) that said that they have emailed the editor of a newspaper in Mesa (near Apache Jct. where Staerkel works) and told of the piracy going on. Links to TH and TPIN threads were prvided. So, it will be interesting to see if anything comes of that.

Just to add a bit more detail about George's collection of artist's authentic trumpets. George was supposedly using these trumpets on the "Tribute Series CD's" (when they were still available)...The trumpet George supposedly talked Doc into selling him was a trumpet he claims Doc used on his final concert tour...but the trumpet George has is a Getzen- Mike Vax model. Didn't Doc use Destino trumpets on his final tour-maybe someone can confirm? The Al Hirt trumpet George has is a Schilke Bb tunable bell trumpet that George claims he purchased from someone who saw Al Hirt use it on tour and has a letter of authenticity (as he does for the Getzen as well). I don't recall how he claims to have acquired Bill Chase's trumpet nor can I recall the make/model. Maybe George can fill us in on even more details...?

I am temporarily posting a link to 3 pieces.
http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?songs=574257&T=6727

Has anybody heard these 3 recordings before? The first 2 are sax and the last one is trumpet. Feel free to private message me too. Any info will be helpful...thanks.

First of all, I am quite sure that Doc used on of his Destino trumpets on HIS final tour , not a Getzen. Secondly , Al Hirt was playing a Courtios (French)model in his last years . He always , as far back as I can remember he used the French Leblanc and Courtios Trumpets from the late 60's on. Before that, he used a Martin Committe Model.
Now to the recordings in the post by equally well tempered, I believe that the recording of
"Maria" is a doctored up version of the Arturo Sandoval recording of the tune, aren't computers marvelous? It is the Arturo version used as a basic track with our boy George playing the easier parts of the melody ,
but the high stuff is definetly Arturo's playing. I don't believe I am wrong about this.

The Maria rendition mimicks the Sandoval recording, but it is not the same as the Arturo recording I own. I think this may be GS, just in the same solo version as Arturo. (Maybe Sandoval recorded it more than once?)

The Maria clip:

The background track is completely cheesy. There are techniques to make a programmed track sound more natural. You will not find them used here.

To my ears, the high parts sound like they have been digitally pitch-shifted. Played lower and then shifted up.

George bought that Vax horn from a music store. I sold it to him.

Did you sell him the scream box too?!

If you're sure it works I'll order a dozen!

I just met a girl name Medusa. The Maria we knew is now a chainsmoking biker chick with dreadlocks and a penchant for crystal meth.

I don' t know if it's Arturo or not. I have a recording of Arturo playing Maria; it's based more on the Maynard version. Didn't recognize any of the licks. Did Arturo record it more than once?

Regardless of who the trumpet player(s) was (were), that arrangement was about the most unpleasant thing I've ever heard.

I will not listen to it again. I just ate a plate of Polish sausage and fried cabbage.

Yes sir he certainly did . I believe that is what I said in my post or what I meant to say, in his later years ,from the 80's on he used the Courtios trumpets.
I have some of my Dad's old albums from the early 60's(Honey in the Horn) and the album(remember those) cover shows Al holding a Martin Committee model.
Holton also made an Al Hirt model in the mid to late sixties (after Leblanc USA bought out Holton). I believe that it was pretty much the same horn.
I definetly remember watching his show on TV in the mid to late sixties and on that show he used a Leblanc trumpet

Apparently George was in at my store to pick up some saxophone repair work. I didn't talk to him, but apparently he told folks that it was "time to hit the road!"

I'll bet.

Interesting, although...according to George's 'AZ Opry' website, he has 12 more performances this month. I'm sure he'll complete those and then I suppose he will "hit the road" to provide entertainment at a dinner theater in Ruidoso, NM through October. His standard schedule.
