Another take:

It would cut back on the personality conflicts, though.

Well, the good thing is it can only *copy* a good conductor, and it can't respond to people...but it is still pretty neat.

The Irony of all Irony...... a robot from HONDA conducts the DETROIT symphony.

Quote:
During the first rehearsal, the orchestra lost its place when ASIMO began to slow the tempo, something a human conductor would have sensed and corrected, said bassist Larry Hutchinson.

"It's not a communicative device. It simply is programmed to do a sense of gestures," said Leonard Slatkin, the orchestra's musical director. "If the orchestra decides to go faster, there's nothing the robot can do about it. Hopefully, I keep that under control."

But several musicians also said ASIMO was more realistic than they expected.

"The movements are still a little stiff, but very humanlike, much more fluid than I thought," Hutchinson said.

Funny ... that's what people say about my conducting ...

Irony or not for Detroit, Honda has made a one million dollar grant to create The Power of Dreams Music Education Fund that will help support and expand the DSO’s nationally acclaimed music programs for young people. The program is unique in the country and is amazing in its scope (I have a daughter that plays violin in one of the orchestras and in a chamber group).

I watched ASIMO on stage at Orchestra Hall, and while that's pure Honda advertising, the support of music education transcends all the marketing hype...

Uh, Annie, I hate to break it to you, but most of the "flesh and blood"* conductors seem to be copying one another IMNSHO.

*I didn't say "human conductors"...

What does a sperm cell and a conductor have in common?

They both stand only a one-in-a-million chance of becoming a human...

jp- that wasn't something I noticed, but thanks!!!
