I played one of those for a while, years ago, but never really liked the bb's Marcinkiewicz has. I had Kanstul copy the top so I could try different bb's on it. It's still in their computer scanner.
Oh ... back the the origin of this thread ... I just played a few gigs with Scott Englebright the last two weeks. He plays on a Shew 1. Sounds good to me _________________ Michael Manthey

The Concert Hall E-14 (Shew #1) is an awesome mouthpiece. You get the blow of a Marcinkiewicz with the heavy blank that Monette lives off of and Marcinkiewicz blank design is now patented. I have a Monette and this Concert Hall E-14. If you like the E-14 ... you will love the Concert Hall as it adds core to the sound and gives you greater volumn control. Well worth the $125.00. Hope this helps. |

I know from similar experience that Marcinkiewicz would have taken the one you didn't like back for a small restock charge & made you one with any bb you wanted...probably a lot cheaper & faster than Kanstul... I like the S bb which doesn't come on their std model nor many of the Signature models. |

I have a Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece (tpt) I purchased at the Chicago Music Convention around 1986. I cannot find a model number on it anywhere and am simply curious. Any suggestions? |

I played on the Ingram model for quite a while. Opened the throat from stock (28 I believe) to like a 22 and that improved it a lot for me. I've since switched to all GR stuff, mainly playing on a 64.7MS which I use for everything. |

What a blast from the past!
Kind of strange to see a post that I started 6 years ago come back to life!!
It's also interesting to see how my equipment has changed.
I'm no longer a Bach guy for regular playing. I switched to the Warburton 4 series for Bb, flugel, and piccolo. The 4M/7 is my go-to combination for Bb, and I'll use a 4SV on the rare occasions I play piccolo.
For lead I largely stayed with Marcinkiewicz. For lead I switched to a Shew 1.5 about 2 or 3 years ago, and then within the last year to an ACB Lead 1.25 (which Trent said was similar to a Shew 1.25).
I'm trying to become a jazz guy so when I use a Marcinkewicz Shew 2 when I play/butcher the solo chair.
I'm really comfortable with the current mouthpieces I currently use, but in another 6 years I'll bump this thread and see where I land. _________________ 1987 Bach Strad 37

I've recently discovered Marcineiwicz' standard #11 and #15 pieces which I'm liking, but there's no equivelent in Flugelhorn mouthpieces which I find really weird - why on earth would there be no matching flugel pieces?
Sent them an Email a few days ago but yet to hear back. |

How does the ACB feel / play compared to the Marc. 1.5? |

For me, I like the feel of the rim on the ACB mouthpiece a lot better than the Marcinkiewicz.
To me the Marcinkewicz rim had a little too much edge. It didn't necessarily cut into my lip, but the ACB rim still allows me to "grip" the mouthpiece without the feeling of it being sharp.
As for playing, I still get a nice crispness to my sound on the ACB without the occasional harshness that I'd hear when I was getting tired on the Marcinkewicz. _________________ 1987 Bach Strad 37

Have been playing on Marcinkiewicz #5 flugel since 2002 and absolutely love it and will not change. For my Bb trumpet, I mostly use my all around Yammie Shew Jazz, however I will pull My Marcinkiewicz E6 (Herb Albert) out of my back pocket for lead or "hot" solos. Before the E6 I experimented with the Vizzutti E12 for a few months, however following the honey moon phase it was just too shallow & narrow for me. I loved the additional 2 step range (up to A above high C for me) but it felt like I couldn't get enough air through it thus sounded thin to my ears. And finally, before the latter I played the E9.6 for about 7-9 years with pretty good results.
In conclusion, thou I love the Marcinkiewicz MP's to cut through or add range and endurance, I haven't found one that gives me the "buttery-full-jazzy" tone quality that I get with the Yammie Shew Jazz. _________________ "If you find a job you really like, you'll never work a day in your life".

I play a marcinkiewicz #6 (10.5c) for lead. Love it!!!
It slots in the high register so well and sound neat. _________________ Horns:

I use a Shew 1.25.
I found my tuning was sharp between G on the staff through to about high D. I bailed on the mouthpiece for a while, then decided I would cut it for Warburton backbores because like you, I have experienced a huge improvement since using the mouthpiece with no sacrifice to tone.
I threaded it with the Warburton 3/8"x40 threads and have tried it with a few backbores. For me I thought the backbore was too open. I find good results with a #2 bb. More open and the tuning drifts sharp again. Great core and the tuning is much much better. High D is sharp, but the rest of the scale is similar to my warburton tops.
I am going to try a #1 backbore soon, order a Shew 1 piece and the Yamaha Shew Lead, and if needs be I will pop them onto the lathe and do the same to them. I will also get the Ingram model. I have played it and liked it but at the time was used to much bigger gear. I think i have a better chance of playing it now.
Out of interest I will try to borrow a huge BB and record results.
I will be producing a pitch tendancy chart for my tests (and playing) as I rely on my ear and lip feel on gigs, a tuner and memory in the shed.
I read somewhere that Marcinkiewicz were unwilling to modify their backbores, but this may be internet rubbish. In any case, given my access to a lathe etc... I took it on myself.
I also use the Marcinkiewicz Shew flugel piece. There's a real knack to playing that. When you back off and respect it, the response and sound are wonderful. Same as the lead pieces. I had gotten into a habbit of muscling the flugel with a Warburton 4FLX with a #12 bore.
I will have to turn my Shew flugel piece down to suit my Bach shank-sized 1525.
Interesting to see all of your takes on this!
I too use Warburtons for more legit or jazz playing - a 6S with one of my own backbores, a 6M with a #4 backbore. I also use a Getzen 10 1/2C and a Bach Mt Vernon 10 1/2C. _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!

I'm jealous of the way you chop and swap backbores and tops so easily.
I tend to stick with one setup or another for a while because i don't like to keep spending money on equipment, but you have the skill to do a lot on your own, so that saves you a lot in the end. _________________ 1987 Bach Strad 37

In an effort to save a damaged Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece for a "Little John" Replogle we threaded his favorite top with 3/8" x 40 threads. He ended up with an Osmun 1 backbore with #30 throat. _________________ James Becker

Any comment on how the piece sounded before and after? Did he prefer the modified piece?
Can anyone speak to the consistency of Marcinkiewicz mouthpieces?
Thanks!

John had taken it to a music store downtown to have the shank straightened and it never played right after that. So we ended up transfering a shank from one of his other pieces with 3/8-40 threads. He later tried Bob's #1 backbore and like it even better. A happy ending to an otherwise tradgic story. _________________ James Becker
