I think Wynton could have tongued it if he had wanted to. But it is much prettier and smoother slurred.

Did Wynton ever play it live?

In a masterclass with Allen Vizzutti he mentioned that it took Mendez two years to perfect Moto Perpetuo to the point he had it.

Whoever thinks that Mendez sacrificed any artistry for the sake of virtuosity would be mistaken.

That being said I think anyone who plays it double tounged should win automatically. I can't double tounge for 5 minutes straight, and I definately sure can't do it circular breathing.

Imagine playing a piece like that and taking a breath in between sixteenth notes and still sound amazing!!! What Mendez did only a few handfuls of us can hope to accomplish in our lifetime. Mendez is machine-like with his tonguing. And he had to put the horn down for a few years because of an injury and when he picked up the horn again, he could play anywhere on his mouth. It would all sound the same!!!!! Mendez playing that piece, it is simply god-like.

Hey guys- I don't mean to rain on your parade but Sergei Nakariakov blows them both completely out of the water on Moto perpetuo... better time, cleaner than Mendez and More musical than Wynton's. However my favorite showman by far is Mendez- perhaps impossible to top in that right.
