For you period instrument guys... I'm wondering what a cornetto sounds like? Does anybody have recordings that feature it?

I have a recording of Monteverdi's Orfeo and in it there are some parts for cornetto... But it sounds like they were done on modern (or maybe natural) trumpets and I'm just dying to know what the deal is.

I've always imagined it sounding kind of like a serpent but higher pitched.

Monteverdi's L'Orfeo has parts for both cornettos and natural trumpets, so the trumpets are what you might be focusing on. Cornettos sound something like muted clarinets, or maybe a reaallly quiet alto trombone. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it ! John

Cool video, thanks a bunch! I also found one linked at the bottom to Crispian-Steele Perkins playing a cornetto:

You may want to check out the album "Music of the Gothic Era" by David Munrow's Early Music consort. There is a very nice cornetto duet on that with Michael Laird and Iaan Wilson.

The tone quality of the cornetto I find to be quite voice-like and sweet generally.
Still, the frightened rabbit call was hilarious.

I have this CD of cornetto music:

Worth a listen to if you want to hear a range of stuff.

Acoustically the instrument is right between the oboe and the cornet. I feel it sits there sonically as well.
