Wow! Can you please tell us more who made this amazing horn for you? Robb Stewart is my guess (he's amazing!!!!)

Hi Trent,

You've guessed correctly -- Robb Stewart made this horn for me. His website has a page describing one that he made for another brass enthusiast, and it looked so beautiful that I asked him if he could make one for me in a somewhat smaller bore size (the original was .468", a size the design favors, but I am a 'small-to-medium bore guy' so we compromised on a bore size of .462"). I actually received the horn in raw brass, and then had it engraved by Sherry Huntley and lacquered by Charlie Melk.

It is inspired by a horn made by Adalbert Riedl around the turn of the last century (that is, around 1900); it is not a direct copy because the Riedl horn used Berliner valves, which would have required fabrication (I don't think anyone makes them these days). Robb also altered the design to ensure good tone and intonation.

The horn is a very nice player. And yes, Robb Stewart is amazing.

I've wanted to really capture what is happening to my raw Copper Wild Thing Flugelhorn. Today, I had the chance.

I like keeping the brass bright and the inside of the bell, too. But the colors that come when ya just let the copper do its thing...!

Brian, I love it!

A player at a Chamber Music retreat I attended had a Gansch horn that was chemically aged and then lacquered. I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Some brass black from your local gun store will do the same, in just a few minutes.

My apologies!
It's the wee hours of the morning now but I will put my thoughts together and send you a private message tomorrow if that's ok?

This thread is so good it should go on forever. I want to see more pictures of the copper wild thing as the brass continues to age. I love the Caduceus, the Harrelson, the Conns the Bachs, the Schilkes, the Benges, the Getzens, the Kanstuls.... oh, and for Tom, the Bueschers as well.

I am pleased to see it is still running...and also all the wonderful photographs. I suppose it might make "sticky" for easy access one day...?

This German horn looks like a Van Laar. Is it the same valve block ?
