One of the joys of music is discovering a new player. So I'm sure many of you already know Joe Wilder's playing but he's my big discovery of the year. I've been listening to a Savoy recording of JW called, Joe Wilder 'N Wilder. It's wonderful!

It's a quartet recording from 1956 with Hank Jones and Kenny Clarke. The first cut, Cherokee, is 10 minutes of Joe improvising in a swinging, lyrical way--long loping lines that flow and cascade. Just beautiful improvising. It's the playing of a master--someone relaxed and simply playing.

What else should I get to hear more of this guy? Thanks! Paul

Most of my students are required to transcribe that solo. One of the great
solos of all time, IMO.

The other albums are a little more rare: "The Pretty Sound" and "Peter Gunn". I have them on LP. Joe can also be heard on many of Lionel Hampton's sides from the 1940s and 50s.
