One of the joys of music is discovering a new player. So I'm sure many of you already know Joe Wilder's playing but he's my big discovery of the year. I've been listening to a Savoy recording of JW called, Joe Wilder 'N Wilder. It's wonderful!
It's a quartet recording from 1956 with Hank Jones and Kenny Clarke. The first cut, Cherokee, is 10 minutes of Joe improvising in a swinging, lyrical way--long loping lines that flow and cascade. Just beautiful improvising. It's the playing of a master--someone relaxed and simply playing.
What else should I get to hear more of this guy? Thanks! Paul _________________ Getzen 800DLX cornet

Most of my students are required to transcribe that solo. One of the great
solos of all time, IMO.
The other albums are a little more rare: "The Pretty Sound" and "Peter Gunn". I have them on LP. Joe can also be heard on many of Lionel Hampton's sides from the 1940s and 50s. |
