I ordered this book last week, and just received it last night. Highly recommended!:

Trumpet Descants: for 101 Noteworthy Hymns, by Lorna Tedesco
List Price: $25.00, 254 pp , 8 1/2 x 11
Church Publishing ISBN-13: 978-0-89869-442-0 4426
--------------------------------------------------------------------
It has the melody line and two descants for each of the hymns (one slightly easier than the other), including most of the standard "Christmas Carols". Each hymn also has one version in C (printed above the piano/organ part) and a separate page for Bb.

Interesting! I could use a good descant book.
Do they seem well written? Do you own any other descant books? If so, how does this compare?
The order page provides a look at the table of contents; I wish that they had provided a sample page, too. Would you be interested in posting or PM'ing a sample of one of the descants? Even just a half-page - enough to get an idea of what they are like without infringing on the copyright. (I could just email the author.)

Turns out that this book has its own web page. There is an example posted there.

I will expose my ignorance and ask a simple question.
I have access to the "obligato" parts for almost all hymns one would ever come across. It is published as a companion book to the instrumental hymnal. In my opinion, some of them are kind of hoky sounding.
Technically, is there a difference between an obligato part and a descant part? _________________ Larry Woods

Technically, no.
Musically, you should avoid sounding hoky, even in Church. Especially in Church! Usually Church musicians are volunteers, and the composers are low paid at best. READ: the standards are lowered. Sort of like a letter of recommendation from you Pastor is worthless, as he'd never say anything bad about anyone. (Common perception, anyway)
If your obligatos are hoky, PLAY DESCANTS!! |

I realize that this is a revived zombie thread, but I'll second this post - I've used this book fairly regularly since I bought it in 1989 as a HS senior. I don't go to a church gig without taking it with me, and there have been many times a music director has wanted to know if I could perhaps also play along to a hymn they were doing. Not only could I play along, but I could also play a descant on the final verse. The descants in this book are not hokey - they sound pretty good. _________________ Patrick Gleason
