You just can't beat those old Severinsens, I have one from 1973 that had been locked in my closet since 1978 and I decided to give it to my 11 year old. I had it professionally cleaned and the leadpipe replaced, and also had the gold valve trim kit put on it. Except around the valves (the usual spots) the horn looks brand new and the valves exceptionally fast.
You can check out the horn on youtube, my son posted a video of himself playing it under the name "Trumpet Chris".

Those old Severinsen/ Eternas are great horns. They are a bit on the bright side but I just love them. I had to replace the leadpipe on the one I have now and I used a Bach 25 pipe; it still plays well, lights up still and is darker now as well. Fun horns. _________________ Mark LaSavio

I have serial #SK 3817. According to Mary Rima at Getzen, that would date its manufacture to sometime in 1967-1968. I bought it used from a friend in 1972, after he picked up his Bach 43.
They're really great horns. |

I have one that I bought as a comeback player almost three years ago. It plays great but I wish it had a thumb saddle. A little more resistance would be good too--it's very free-blowing and sometimes difficult for me to control. I've enquired about getting the .458 tuning slide but haven't found one for a good price. I don't know if that would change the way it plays.

I saw an ad in a local paper with a gentleman selling a Getzen Severinson.
He says he bought it new 2 years ago. Did Doc go back to Getzen somewhere between the Destino and his new horn? |

He worked on the Getzen 3001 Severinsen Custom Bb Trumpet in the early 2000's. _________________ 1976 Getzen Eterna Severinsen Model ML

Actually, the early Severinsens came with both a .460 tuning slide and a .458 tuning slide. I am not aware of there ever having been a .468 slide.

I just sold my 1964 3 digit Severinsen. I needed the money badly.

The .468 was the Large Bore Model (LB). Getzen didn't include the .460 or .458 with the LB but was nice enough to send me one way back when (and I mean WAY back when) I asked. |

Roger Voisin once told me that the major problem with this horn was that Getzen didn't charge enough for it. _________________ John Collins

My first pro horn was a Getzen Severinsen model that I bought in 1976. It served me well for many years.
When I was in college literally everyone in my symphonic band played a Bach Stradivarius, except for me. I had the good fortune of playing first chair though. I eventually sold the horn, but wish now that I had kept it for my collection.
I purchased a Getzen 700 for my 8 year old daughter, even though she hasn't started playing yet. _________________ Best Regards, Play Well!! |

Yes, a 1B should mellow things out a bit.
I changed the pipe because the original one was rotted out and of all the choices I had sitting in my drawer the 25 worked best. _________________ Mark LaSavio

I own SK253XX. Could be circa '73? My parents bought it (new) for me as the upgrade from a Bundy. I've played it ever since. Valves are still like buttah, finish is great. I occasionally darken mine with a Schilke Symphony Series piece, otherwise I play GR. |

Mark, I tried out another kid's brand-new 1973 Severinsen in 9th grade and absolutely fell in love with it. Great horn. _________________ '64 Conn Connstellation 38B

I'm back in the "way back machine" selling trumpets in Boston in the 70's & 80's. Getzen never secured the market in the northeast. Marching bands were dying, followed by "stage bands" (thanks prop. 2 1/2). Concert band and orchestra were hanging on in stronger programs. The Severinsen played great, but sounded quite different from Bach behind the bell. Played great, didn't sell. Bach sounded more refined...behind the bell...for most. _________________ Roy Miller |
