Some of the topics have gotten a little wild here on TH lately, so I wanted to bring back the joy by sharing this link I found. You won't believe how many free transcriptions there are here:
http://davidvaldez.blogspot.com/2008/07/thousands-of-pages-of-jazz.html
To access the transcriptions highlight and copy the password to the right of the link, click the link and then paste the password when asked.

Unbelievable! Just flipping through at random I landed on the Japanese transcriptions file. More than 1,700 pages of juicy solos! Thanks! _________________ Jim Hatfield

There will definately be an extra-something in your stocking this year!
Technical queston: How do you isolate a particular solo to print?
Thanks a million for this great resource!

Yes, thanks a zillion! Any idea on the other volumes and a table of contents or an index?
To print only one solo, choose print and only print the pages that the solo is on.
To remove password just print the file as a new PDF file. It may not print all the pages to file at once. I got the first 624 on vol 5, then it got a stack error. I'll try again later. |

Man, it's going to take me until NEXT CHRISTMAS to get through all that great stuff! The website itself, not even counting the links to the transcriptions, just goes ON AND ON with great articles and pictures of jazz greats, and clips of their playing.
Here is a link to a dixie (excuse me: trad) version of "Giant Steps" that I found about halfway through the Valdes site.

What a hoot!

What a great site!
I noticed they sell a Fake Book which comes with all the original recordings ,in all the keys along with some other goodies. They sell it for like $67. That sounds like an awesome find.....any thoughts on this deal? |

I just downloaded the first one, Vol 5. It was 90MB.
FYI, the transcriptions are in alphabetical order by soloist first name, so there are Art Farmer transcriptions, then Art Pepper, etc. The first volume goes from A though (D)avid Sanborn. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley is filed under "C" for Cannonball, but Bird is under "C' for Charlie. I didn't see an index.
Finding an individual song by its name is harder, but they are in alphabetical order of song name within each soloist. You would have to know who played the solo.
Still, a wealth of stuff here. Thanks!
ps saw a couple of transcriptions by TH's own Jeff Helgesen. _________________ Matt Finley https://mattfinley.bandcamp.com/releases

This is a great treasure trove and it will be great to get a complete index to the volumes.
I've just skimmed vol 5 and here are the trumpet players I've found
Bill Chase 135-37
Billy Butterfield 140-8
Bix 149-160
Blue Mitchell 161-206
Bobby Hackett 390-488
Bobby Shew 493
Booker little 531-550
Buck Clayton 575-589
Bunny Berigan 612-630
Carl Saunders 1056-1092
Charlie Shavers 1202-1222
Chet Baker 1223-1365
Clark Terry 1381-1413
Claudio Roditis 1414-1433
Clifford Brown 1441-1614
Miles Davis 1648
Conte Condoli 1656-71
Dave Douglas 1674
These are surrounded with all sorts of sax solos--lots of suprises: Candy Dulfer, Pres Bill Clinton, David Sanborn, Bob Berg, Bob Mintzer, Coleman Hawkins, Bird, etc.
In some cases you'll see duet parts (Paul Desmond/Gerry Mulligan; Branford & Wynton).
(this is just one volume.) _________________ Getzen 800DLX cornet
