Coltrane....I got the opportunity to see Wynton play his "Love Supreme" a few months ago which led me to buy the cd of Coltrane playing it at the 1965 Juan Les Pins Jazz Festival. Oddly enough, I liked Wynton's version much better. Coltrane had some awesome stuff on there but it drove me crazy when he went into the upper register. So shrill. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? _________________ --Matt--

Stan Getz is one of my favorites! I love the lines that guy plays...and his tone. A trumpet player at heart! I wish I had more of his recordings.
I agree with QuadC.... Ellington had some amazing reed monsters in his band! (You forgot to mention Paul Gonsalves ) I think the Far East Suite is one of my favorite Ellington recordings.

I've been buying jazz records since my junior year of high school in 1975. I caught the "completist" disease for Coltrane and Lester Young. I've been moved and wowed by Charlie Parker, Evan Parker, Ike Quebec, Steve Lacy, Jimmy Lyons, Warne Marsh and the Zoot Sims/Jimmy Rowles records. I've listened to most of the historical cats and most of the free jazz cats too. I like the saxophone. I was off the trumpet for 22 years until last year, but played tenor saxophone for about the first six years.

Wayne Shorter, in addition to being a truly distinctive saxophonist, has written some of my favorite music - regardless of genre. Such a great composer!
I like the way Uri Caine plays piano, too. Also Danilo Perez! |

I'm a big fan of Charlie Parker. I listen to him a lot. I also listen to cats like Ray Brown, Buddy Rich, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, Gene Krupa, Cannonball Adderly; the list goes on and on. You can't leave out the vocalists either. Whether you love or hate 'em we can all learn something from 'em

Great question... All the reed players that I like were brought to me by following trumpet players...
Dizzy took me to Charlie Parker
Miles Davis took me to John Coltrane
Miles Davis took me to Cannonball Adderley
Donald Byrd took me to Dexter Gordon
Lee Morgan took me to Hank Mobley and Joe Henderson
Clifford Brown took me to Sonny Rollins
Gotta love the connections in Jazz...

Anyone into Wayne Shorter ought to spring for the Miles Davis _Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965_ (Columbia, 7 CDs, and was also available as an LP set on Mosaic).
This set has the best Wayne Shorter playing on record.
It's also, I think, the only Miles Davis set with the Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams band that uses the "old" repertoire ("All Blues," "Stella By Starlight," "Walkin'," "So What," etc). The studio records this band made used newer originals. |

I give just about all types of music and equal shake, but I don't go out of my way to listen to reed players. I will however, go out of my way to listen to a player of "God's instrumet". (as stated by Maynard Ferguson) _________________ Patrick Gleason

I love reeds, especially Coltrane, Dolphy, Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet on Bitches Brew), Charlie Mariano, Shorter (and his writing), Ornette Coleman, gosh there are many others. I also love guitarists, particularly Bill Frizell and earlier McLaughlin. Charlie Hunter, gulp. The guy I saw last week at the Middle East. I also love drummers & percussionists, lately Kennie Barron, but many others over the years. Nana Vasconcelos. Max Roach. Elvin. Tony williams on Nefertiti. The guy in Ministry. I love many bands, singer song writers and ambient sound experrimenters. International musicians: Zakir Husain is probably the most accomplished percussionist on the planet. The tabla player. It's all goin on out there, and I'd say that there is more interesting exciting music available today that ever before in history. And I say this the day after the Grammies. That's funny. _________________ "Truth is not in the heights but at the bottom of all things."
