If you're looking for new material that's both instructive and enjoyable, try a pair of etude books from highly regarded Philadelphia-area player/teacher John Thyhsen. I have them both and they're a welcome alternative to scales, arpeggios and all the other building blocks of good trumpet playing.
Trumpet Tunes I is subtitled "building confidence through melodic playing" and contains 101 short melodies designed to help performers develop their ability to play more consistently with improved technique and beautiful sound.
Trumpet Tunes II addresses the same goals but through odd meter melodies and Latin-rhythm tunes.
The books are available from John for $15 each, payable by check to John at 1477 Gradyville Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342
For more information, you can contact John at hoothaven@hotmail.com
Incidentally, you can hear that John plays as well as he writes by checking out his Hoagy Carmichael retrospective CD, available at CD Baby. _________________ Jim Hatfield
