Hi all.

I need some advice here. I have been playing trumpet for quite sometime. But it was only recently i found out that i actually can't lip-buzz. I've also read some articles on how useful can lip-buzzing be. So i'm really interesting in learning how to lip-buzz.

Thanks

Bobby Shew has talked about this in clinics and videos. Take your index and middle fingers and spread them out to the width of your mouthpiece rim. Place them lightly on your lips until you can achieve a buzz while exhaling air. If you can't do it, give it time and experiment. Also, I know some really excellent players who don't free buzz.

Thanks!

Don't worry about it. It isn't necessary to practice free buzzing in order to learn to play the trumpet; some people would say it's counterproductive.

I'm pretty sure I read that Phil Smith can't do it. That's probably reason enough to not worry about it right there.

That is correct. Ain't that a kick.....so maybe it isn't needed??

Thanks so much guys.

Anyway i'm currently making a big change to my embouchure. Other than buzzing (perphas with at least a rim now) exercise, what else you guys recommend?

Perhaps check out the Chicago School Forum.

The first few years I played I was far too concerned about the physical aspects of playing. My trumpet teacher in college basically got me away from all of that worry and focused on making music. That was a big breakthrough.

You may need this embouchure change. I don't know. Some people have a setup that is so bad it needs to be changed.

I would suggest a lot of lyrical playing. I always play better when I do a lot of this type of playing.

Best of luck to you!

ngzongyi,
Your post is a hard one to reply to (except for the lip buzzing)
You say ....

It's hard to suggest anything with out knowing more.
How long is "quite some time" .... and what kind of results have you obtained in that time?
Why are making a big change in your embouchure? ...... what results are you trying achieve from what you have now that make you want to change embouchures?
Are you studying with anyone or is this a "do it yourself project"?

Jimmy.

the main problem i c is worrying about lip buzzing.
don't.
stop it, now.
it is totally unrelated to great trumpet playing, period.
Some can, and don't. some can and do.
Some can't, and don't.
period.
listen to a great teacher, in person, and practice with a worry free approach, one that professes, "I will find & change my embouchure and play successfully."
again, stop it. no pencils, no lip buzzing. no pedal tones. no costello. no caruso. no reinhardt. no nothing.
get the clarke books, chas colin lip flexibilities, read the text and do what it says.
without worrying.
later, you can experiment with various approaches and find one that will optimize your playing.

This is it, and emphasize studying with the best player/teacher you can find....Schlossberg, Irons, Arban, Charlier, Colin Flex, Top Tones, Vizzutti Bk 1 at least, Solos, Clifford licks in all keys, etc....rest as much as you play, listen to fine music, always make the best sound you can, flow the air....practice better than you ever have before...sleep...work out...rinse, floss....no guru's, maybe Bill Adam...

Lip buzzing isnt important. If you're going to do buzzing drills, use the mpc with a berp. Do the Stamp with a tuner. I had a very expensive lesson ruined by lip buzzing. My chops got blown out and i couldnt focus my apature at all.

Free buzz
1 - Take a very deep, full, three step breath from you naval.
2 - Clamp your lips shut with maximum tension
3 - Blow without letting any air escape from your lips or nose (imagine pressuriizing the head until the air is coming from your eyes)
4 - now relax and enjoy the "free buzz"

get the fundamental embouchure functioning without worrying about any peripheral issues you may discover heralded here.
do it with a great player, preferably a meat and potato orchestral player, or a top notch free lance player.
no problem.
if u desire a third take, just call.

I use free buzzing to a limited extent, but as a tool to work on specific problems and not as an end in itself. It's easy to mess up your playing with it unless you're being coached by someone who knows what they're doing with it and what sorts of problems can be solved by it.

It is a different activity than playing the trumpet, and many trumpet players live happy and productive lives without it.
