|

Kanstul has recently started to show the model 926 4-valve flugel -- based on the model 925 -- to its web site. I thought this was a brand new flugel... Yet, it turns out that this model has been quietly available for several years, sold mostly in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, where it is used in flugel bands.
http://www.kanstul.com/instruments/flugelhorns/926-bb-4-valve-flugelhorn/
Has anyone tried this 4-valver, almost unknown to the US market until now? I'd love to read your impressions... especially if you can contrast it with other 4-valve flugels.
Here are some standard features:
* .415 bore
* French taper
* Top sprung pistons,
* 6" yellow brass bell
* 3 Amado-style water keys,
* Trigger on the 1st valve (specs incorrectly says 3rd valve).
* 4th valve lowers pitch by a fourth
Suggested retail price: $3878 in lackquer finish.
Customizations are available for alternate lead pipes for Bach or large tapers, as well as bell materials like gold brass and Copper.

A 4th. It's like the getzen, but with the smaller bore may play better. |

Looks nice. It'll be nice to have a 4-valve option with a smaller bell, unlike the Getzen 896 and Kanstul 1526, which both have 6.5 inch bells.
One typo in the specifications. They mention it has a 3rd valve trigger. But like the 1526, it looks like it has a 1st valve trigger.

SO basically a 925, but with 4 valves.
One day I'm going to get another 925, and not one of the new ones with the yellow brass bell, but one of the originals where the bell was still made from copper. That was a sweet, sweet flugel and I wish I'd never sold it. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Thank you everyone for the additional info and correction... I have incorporated them in the original post....
Mike, why do you prefer a 6" bell over the 6.5" bell of the 1525 and 1526?
I might call Kanstul in the next several days and ask a few questions about 926... Example: availability of alternate bell materials, availability of mouthpipes with Morse and/or Bach tapers, etc...
Which brings me to the following question... Why are 925, 926, and 1526 using the French taper, given the prevalence of Morse and Bach type MPs, and relative scarcity of French taper MPs?

I like the more compact sound of a 6 inch bell like an old Couesnon. And I think that's why they use the French receiver and wrap, to keep consistent with the Couesnon style.
The four valve might appeal to some looking to extend the range, but the benefit I see is improved intonation without having to use a slide for low Ds and C#s. But for me, the added valve and slide would be excessive.
The 925 is a great horn a bit more compact feeling and easily controlled compared to the 1025 or the wide fluffyness of the 1525. But they're all great.
Kanstul will build a horn in brass, bronze, copper and with whichever receiver you like. French, standard etc. they have different pipes available. Easy. They are still a custom house and will build whatever you like. |

The problem with that, for me anyway, is the price. When I bought my original 925, I bought it brand new for about $1100. Yeah - try finding that horn for anything even remotely close to that now. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Hi G. Actually, I don't necessarily prefer the 6" over the 6.5". I just think it's nice to have a 4-valve option with the smaller bell.

Spoke to Jack Kanstul today...
It turns out that 926 is not a new model... This 4-valver was not advertised in the US until recently, but has been selling in Europe for several years.
The instrument can be custom ordered... A copper bell for example costs $150 extra, and additional mouthpipes -- for large Morse or for Bach tapers, for example -- cost $50
Kanstul now can sell directly to end users at the MAP (minimum advertizable price), which is somewhat lower than MSRP... The standard 926 can be purchased from Kanstul at $2632.00 USD, which is pretty good for a quality 4-valve flugel.
Regards, Guido
The one thing that Kanstul is not offering is a Sterling silver bell. _________________ Cornet: Carolbrass CCR7772R-GSS
