In a recent lecture at the University of Central Florida (Orlando) on 13th February 2003 Bud Herseth let the cat out the bag regarding the origins of the Arnold Jacobs philosophy:

"He [Herseth] believes in the Arnold Jacobs philosophy of not overanalyzing the physical aspects of brass playing. Just take a breath and blow. Play the music and focus on the end result and everything else will take care of itself. Where did Jacobs get the concept? Herseth said he got it from his father who got it from an old English Golf Instruction book."

"Adolph Bud Herseth Lecture Notes" (compiled by Bill Dishman, Gainsville, Florida)

So now you know!

Very interesting. There are many things that musicians can learn from athletes and sports psychologists. The available literature on mental preparation for athletes is much more developed than that for musicians.

Let's Change the name of the Chicago School to the "English School."

Great Idea!

I guess this book on golf was an earlier version of the "Inner Game of......." series.

I just hope this English book doesn't turn out to have been written by an American or a......!?! (Insert another country).

Has anyone read "Golf in the Kingdom"? I found a lot of that one to be applicable to the trumpet.

I always thought that book was the book Casteneda would have written if he were a Scot.

Also, I think the "Legend of Bagger Vance" is a pretty bad movie, but makes a pretty darned good trumpet lesson.

Sounding increasingly like the ex-hippie I am...

Pat

One of the best books on a mental and purity of approach to any activity I have ever read is Harvey Pinnock's Little Red Book.

For those of you who don't play golf, Harvey was the instructor at the Austin County Club in Austin, TX for over 50 years and counts among his students some of the biggest names on the PGA, LGPA and their respective Halls of Fame. Ben Crenshaw dedicated his improbably Masters win in 1995 (?) to Harvey right after Harvey's death.

I've seen a mention of the following book in couple of places, but couldn't find it at Amazon UK, or Amazon.com:

Cox, Richard H : Managing Your Head and Body So You Can Become a Good Musician

It is endorsed by Bud Herseth. Richard Cox has written another book about Sports Training/Psychology.

Has anyone out there read this book?
