I do NOT want this to sound like a sales plug, but about how much could I expect for a 1935 vintage ML Bach NY in exellent condition, very tight valves-probably redone. Raw brass?

It's hard to say, if it isn't original everything, btu still in good shape. I would imagine $6,000 or so would be feasible, as long as there's no red rot, bad solder job, or major dents. The refurbished stuff may decrease the value for collectors, but for players looking for a good NY Bach, that redone valves will be a good thing.

A few years ago, I needed a good cornet for brass band. I had a nice '55 Mt. Vernon Strad trumpet collecting dust in the closet. I stuck it on eBay and got a little over $2000 for it. Bought a nice used cornet for $1100 and put the other $1000 in the bank. I had (and still have) a very good-playing '76 Strad trumpet, and have never missed the '55.

I'm thinking $6000 is way high for a '35 that isn't all original, BTW.

The horn seems to be all original. The valves are so tight that i wonder if it is possible for a Bach trumpet 74 years old to have such good compresion.

There are no funny 1st valve saddles or anything like that on it.

One funny thing is that the valve casing seems to be one piece as opposed to nickel top, brass bottom that seems to be the norm.

I posted pictures of it on bachloyalist a few years back.

I have to say the Kanstul Chicago line is very similar in playability to the NY. Bach's I've tried.

Normally I don't suggest anything like this but I wonder if a specialty auction house might be the way to go. Got the case and paperwork too?

I also see that you are in Sweden.

If it were my horn and I wanted to maximize what I could get for it, I would consider finding an internationally-famous auction house, example Southeby's, and working with them to sell it. Place a decent reserve on it, and see what happens. If the auction house handles it, they will do a very good job for you, and perhaps you will get more than you would, even after you deduct their fees.

On the other hand, it may well be an investment at this point, and in 20 years, who knows? But know this: once you sell it, it is gone forever. There are many stories of people who have regretted selling particular items they did not care about. I am not saying that this is you, with respect to this horn, but it must be considered.

In any event, good luck with it.

Tom

This may seem like a really unusual suggestion but you might consider contacting Ingrid Jensen. I saw her a few nights ago and spoke with her after the show. (what a totally cool lady!)

She told me she had an accident with her current NY Bach and had to have the bell patched... thus the funky weight currently attached to her bell bow. Anyway, apparently she loves the horn and might be interested in yours. Looks like she's touring in Germany most of November.

Just a thought...good luck.

I agree with Tom. You would be losing a fair amount of money in a straight trade.

In many forums it's standard practice to start a thread for this very purpose and label it FEELER:

My feeling is $6,000 USD is too much, even if it's all original. The way you worded the valves in your last post is good, and honest. No sense second guessing.

I have on occaission seen NY Bachs go higher than $3G, or for a little less than that. Auction house sounds to me like they'd take a big chunk? You might let it sit on our marketplace a while first, assuming you don't need the money now. Is there anything like this or Craig's List in EU? The way you're clobbering our dollar is a big market factor.

I guess my estimate was more based on mint, all original Mt Vernons I have seen, not well used New Yorks. My apologies if I led you astray. It's still a very valuable horn, though.

When I said all original, I meant original lacquer, too. I believe you said this horn was raw brass - that knocks the value down for collectors. To the original question, I agree with most of the other posters - I wouldn't do an even trade.

I seriously doubt that you will get as good a deal from a music store as you might selling it yourself and purchasing the new horn with the cash.

After all they have lot's of overhead they need to make up and therefore they will offer less for your horn than you might get on the open market.

One of the local stores that I frequent sells used horns and they are always significantly more expensive than I could purchase them from a private sale.

However, those horns have been worked over by the horn technician and the shop owner needs to make a profit.

I would think a NY would be worth more than a Mt Vernon, but the mint condition thing can be a big cost factor. We won't really know what this particular horn is worth until the owner sells it and tells us how much he got for it

Have to say that I'm getting cold feet about selling.

Like a fellow forumner said; once it's gone it's gone.

If I decide to sell, I'll keep you posted!

Thanks everybody for all your help and input! Most apreciated!

Take a look at the Horntrader website. He has some NY Bach's listed and that might give you a better idea of the market value. Check also Dillon's
website.

If you decide to take a shot on ebay, don't forget the European market. I have sold a few trumpets on ebay.de and ebay.co.uk (and ebay.com) and it has been good. Of course ebay.com is bigger, but a Bach like yours would be very exciting for all within the EU, remember, tax free...

So it might be worth the work to try different venues. Just begin with a good reserve and remember that the ebay fees are quite high when you calculate your reserve. When I sell, I usually offer free insured shipping, so that no one has to worry about the cost of shipping from Sweden.

And of course, do some marketing on net forums like this one and find some really good photos.

Lycka till!
