??? I'm sitting here wondering what trumpet doesn't have a direct connection to the 3rd vale, apart from 4 valve trumpets and herald piccolos...
Did you mean that the shorter leadpipe makes for less time for the air to cool and condense moisture around a water key, and that moisture then tends to collect around the 3rd valve and break down the lubrication of any oil present?
Otherwise our valve oil is going to quickly evaporate on ALL trumpets in one valve or another, as the air has to get in somehow...

Hi Andy. Just an observation that the 3rd valve with the shorter leadpipe is exposed to the open air, and the other two are sealed from the open air. It seems to make sense to me.

Yes, as does all Bb trumpets. They also have the same exposure on the first valve, as the bell is normally not blocked off.
Not sure what point you are trying to make.

Are you sure the first valve is as exposed as the third? No crook in the leadpipe.

Don’t worry, all three of your valves are equally vented through the holes on both the top and bottom caps!
Seriously, this is nothing to worry about. Oil your valves the first time you get it out of the case everyday (yes, for all of your trumpets) and it will be the best treatment for all of them. If you have a horn that you will be storing away for a while (likely with an f/g), make sure to get as much water out as possible, oil the valves, and then put it in the case. |

Does a bend or crook form a vacuum? Just because you can’t see around a bend in a tube doesn’t mean that air can’t make it around. The tube of a brass instrument is open at both ends, the only sections closed off are the valve rubes when the valve is up. Unless you have air moving through the tube, it will just sit there and do nothing. It won’t dry anything like oils out due to length, bends, to. You’d a,so expect the first valves of all rotary trumpets to have issues, which I assure you, mine do not...
This is all very similar to expecting CO2 absorbent to deplete in a closed or semi-closed environment. It doesn’t, it jut sits there, like valve oil will.and it better have, or I would have kicked the bucket years ago when I tested this out in real world conditions (80m underwater).
It’s a solution searching for a problem which doesn’t exist. The best things o do is ply your instrument, blow the water out at the end of a session, and oil the valves when going to play.
