I think his secret is probably many hours of practice a day over a long period of time, but this is cool video nonetheless. Thanks for posting it. _________________ Jonathan Vieker

Does anyone know what the instrument is actually called? I know Adam calls it a tingsha but they're bells, not a harp. _________________ Schilke B1

Adam is a good friend of mine and he actually relies on this concept more than you might think. Sure, he practices, but he truly believes that if you use your tongue to resonate certain overtones (much like a dijeredoo, throat singer, or that instrument in the video), it will sing the pitch through the horn.
He's very EXACT with it... meaning, his tongue has a specific position for middle G, high C, and double G. This is basically his foundation for trumpet playing.
Regardless of you what you might think, he does not practice his range. And what I mean is, he doesn't do long tones to try and increases his range 1 more note, or anything like that. He relies on his fundamentals of air speed, direction, and tongue placement to play throughout all registers.
Quite an amazing player, with a unique approach.... tough to duplicate his methods exactly, but it works REALLY well for him. _________________ Mark |

Tongue level!???
Completely disprovable and requiring a reversal of physical/natural law to "work"...
In other words IF what Adam is saying is really going on in his trumpet playing "system"? Then it is just as possible that the Earth's gravity could reverse on his own demand. That some force could pull him, you, or me or me into outer space at any given time due only to his own whim.
Thing to remember: A law of nature can not be violated. A law of nature can not not changed. A law of nature requires no enforcement.
This ain't complicated stuff folks.
Philosophies of brass playing that promote tongue level changes for interval movement are nothing less than commercial fraud.

I'm not saying I do it.... I'm just saying this is what he does and believes to work best for him. _________________ Mark |

lol i had some funny experiences after seeing this vid when i grabbed my horn.
rock solid range to G above the staff ( embouchure problems ) when i slur i can make it to a fairly weak High C, when i focused more on my tong and doing the kind of whistling i maintained a strong e flat above high C !
to me this isnt really usable(yet) and seems like a gimmick but had some instant results, lets see what other days will bring !
the upper register seems to be a combination of air support/velocity, jaw position, lip compression. but i didnt spend much attention to the tongue, maybe this is the missing link in my embouchure problem. |

When you restricted your mouth cavity by moving your tongue upwards you actually closed your jaw slightly at the same time. This reduced the "door frame" of the upper lip and allowed a higher pitch to emanate. But the restriction of the mouth cavity had nothing to do with the pitch change directly.
In fact "Tongue arch for range" issues are not only false but provably false. And like i said a minute ago not even possible because they would require a violation of physical law. |

Proof?
I can't PROVE Galileo's theory of gravity but his thoughts on the matter seem to explain the condition accurately.
I can't PROVE Galileo's idea that the Earth revolves around the sun but this concept not only seems to EXPLAIN the matter perfectly but also appears well founded. Especially after the beginning of inter-planetary space travel starting fifty years ago.
The idea that a jaw movement causing a teeth closure and influencing a reduction in upper lip aperture size making the pitch ascend (in a brass instrument player) is supported by ALL THE EVIDENCE.
The idea that a tongue arch raises a pitch is REFUTED by ALL OF NATURAL LAW.
So take your pick. This ain't like betting on Red vs Black here folks... |

What natural laws in specific and more importantly how are they applicable to the situation. |
