I tried all of them, including that trumpet players stuff I see advertised everywhere. I used Burts Bees and Carmex, but I always come back to this:
Mentholatum Stick Lip Balm
I know some of you will vehemently disagree, but this is the only thing I can use all day long day after day without feeling like my lips are greasy or waxy. Unfortuntately, the stuff is not always easy to find at the store. _________________ A Better way to Shop for Trumpets on eBay

What's my preferred lip balm? None.
I don't like using a lip balm for a few reasons:
- It adds an different feel to playing the horn (A minor consideration)
- The more you use a lip balm, the more your lips seem to need one. The less you use one, the less you'll need one you'll discover.
Sometimes I see people who apply lip balm every 15 minutes or so (even brass players). It's ridiculous. Human lips thrived survived for thousands of years without lip balms.
Now, I'll admit that there are sometimes a few days in the winter (and by a few, I mean 5 or less) when my lips really dry out - especially overnight. I use either the Vaseline Lip therapy (non medicated) which is basically Vaseline in a lip balm-like container or one of the Burt's Bees lip products. Stay as natural as possible. Stuff like Chapstick and others have lots of chemicals you don't need to expose yourself or your lips to.
The fewer chemicals you put on your lips the healthier they and you will be. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

I know it's not most people's favorite, but I got hooked on ChapStick 35 years ago. And I still use it. |

Chopsaver is the best stuff I have ever used. You can put it on and still play. It's not greasy at all and really soothes soar lips and takes the fatigued feeling away. _________________ Besson Sovereign 924R Eb Cornet - Stork 3SC

I agree about ChopSaver. At first, I was put off by all the ads in the AFM magazine. I thought that it was probably just over-priced crap. But I finally tried it and am now hooked.
BTW, are "soar" lips the chops of lead players?

Avon Care Deeply for everyday/occasional use. A&D ointment when things get really dried out, but only overnights. Too nasty during the day.

Best lip balm?
You play a circus gig or lead trumpet for an R&B group un-miked. Constant loud blowing with unmerciful high register requirements. Do this for between six moths and two years and your lips won't crack even at the top of Mt. Washington in February.
True fact. |

Vitamin E tablets. Nice and messy. I only use them overnight when my chops are shot. Rumor has it you can get it in a tube now, but I am too lazy to find it. |

I use the most beautiful playing and looking cellist in Hollywood. Her "treatment" has for the past six years, worked just fine. The fact that I'm old enough to be her grandfather, could be a contributing factor.

Hm...
I think I'll take what's behind door #2, Bob!
Natural, organic, and effective. Sounds good to me.

I'm sure there are probably some exceptions. However I believe that the general rule is:
If your lips are chapping in cold weather you're just not practicing enough.
This is one of the purest barometers of endurance. The person playing the heavy gigs over many months/years doesn't need lip balm. His chops are steel.
This condition reminds me of the Vince Lombardi practice regimen. Once upon a time one of his players said:
"We always looked forward to Sundays. All we had to do was beat the other team. That was easy because during the week our practices and workouts damn near killed us". |
