I recently saw a trumpet advertised here and contacted the seller who was a friend of the owner. Both of them are Canadian. The owner is supposedly a jazz musician. I will leave the names out for now, I just want some opinions.

Through many email and phone calls we agreed on a price and the seller requested that I send the money through e-check and would accept no other form of payment. He would not take escrow even though I offered to pay the escrow charges. This guy claims to be well known and respected on this forum. He sent me an angry letter stating that I did not understand internet purchasing and that he buys and sells many instruments without any form of assurance, that is just the way it is done. Am I right to be suspicious??

I would really appreciate any advice in this matter.

Yes, you are right. Anyone who has been involved in remote transactions and has followed TrumpetHerald would have no issue with using an escrow service if the purchaser was paying for the privilege.

The only exception I would envision is if the person is desperate for money and cannot wait the extra few days.

But this wouldn't explain the angry response.

Run away.

Legitimate people sometimes have attitudes. No reason to pay extra for them. There's no horn that rare that you can't find another if you want.

If the guy is active on this forum and you have his screen name, I can't see any problem with a post that says, "I am about to send $XXXX to trumpetherald participant, screen name abcd. Anybody ever have any experiences with him."

If he has chosen to conceal his identity here, use of just the screen name protects him. A lot of our members are readily identifiable from their posts, their profiles or their signature lines. You might get a lot of comfort from his past history.

If you smoke out some bad history, you will have done us all a favor.

The seller must assume that you want the horn so badly that you will "cast aside all doubt" about accepting his rules.

It appears to be a "one-sided" deal favoring the seller only. The horn would have to be the "perfect one" for the buyer to agree to the seller's terms and then I would still decline.

The seller gives the impression that he must be respected, but the buyer appears to receive little respect for being cautious.

When in doubt, follow your instincts and look elsewhere for a seller you can totally trust who has at least basic respect for the one willing to buy his merchandise. Right now, the offer seems "one- sided" in favor of the seller. Escrow for sure with this guy or say "goodbye" to the purchase.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

If he sells many horns on the internet without assurance maybe he should send you the horn and wait for the payment.

It should work both ways.

I have bought several mpcs, not horns, from TH'ers. Most sent the mpc before they recieved my $$$. I have also sold mpcs that I sent before I recieved the $$$. ALL of my deals on TH have gone well for me. But you have every right to be weary of this guy.

Well it wasn't me (just in case people were wondering)
I just got here

How about using paypal as an option?
Most sellers would accept this - and at least you have some backup if things turn out bad - you can dispute the transaction with them.
Some might request you pay the fees (around 3%) that they incur.

Just an FYI.....Murray owes Paypal a considerable amount of money, and if he puts any in, it will first go to those of us whom he has already scammed--and the list is long. If there is any left over, it will go towards your request.

Not sure we are talking about that guy in this post - but the OP would know.

Being new to Canada (specifically Vancouver) and working with high value goods each day for my day job I am blown away by the amount of people scamming, and fake credit cards there are floating around.
I was just talking with the local Police this morning about this and they too are saying it's getting out of hand.

Be sure to check everything out first before parting with your dollars.
Looks like you are doing just that by raising the query.
