I thought this would be a good one for TH.
I have some K&M stands. The ones I use on gigs (trumpet and flugel) are getting stuck in the bells, not only when storing, but on the gigs as well.
Not a huge problem in comparison to world hunger, but have had some close calls in the heat of battle nearly damaging the horns.
The strange thing is, I've used these stands for many years and this has just recently started happening.
I only have 1 flugel (Yam 8315G) but the stand sticks in all my trumpets, the current one being Carol 6680. Neither have unusually small bells. I've also cut some cloth to go around the bottom of the stand where the pads are, but that doesn't help either. It seems to be sticking inside the bell.
So I am seeking suggestions.

The K&M stand I currently use on my trumpets has the rubber knob on top. At first I thought it was a great idea, but if one doesn't pull straight it makes a noise.

I've had that a little and it is pretty annoying. And while I hadn't previously thought to try it, I'm thinking of using a powder called Power Slide normally used in bowling. Hard to imagine anything sticking with that stuff on it.

Had this same problem.

Fixed by cutting approx inch square self-adhesive pieces of felt and stuck between the felt already there...SOLVED!

OK. So this made it so the stand doesn't go in so far? Sounds reasonable.
Where do get the felt?

Thanks!!~

Hi

I have the same issue with my Boosey and Hawkes Imperial cornet. Every time I pick up the cornet, the stand comes up with it, unless I put my foot one one of the stand legs. I switched to a Hercules in the bell stand for this cornet.

This was the only horn I had this issue with, until I changed my Bb trumpet to the new Xeno recently. The same thing happens, so I also use the Hercules stand for my Xeno.

I've put it down to differences in bell flair, but it sounds like it has suddenly started to happen with your existing horns, which is odd, as obviously their bell flair hasn't altered. Is it owing maybe to a cleaner you have used on either the inside of the bell or the stands?

Take Care

Lou

I figured it was a combination of bell flare and condensation which caused a vacuum effect. The felt eliminated this.

I bought the felt from a cheap shop here in Australia. Cost about $1, and enough left over to do a dozen more. The felt is thicker then the original on the stand.

Eric,

Try Michaels in the Bay Area. They've got lots of crafts-y stuff. Maybe hobby lobby elsewhere. Possibly Walmart?

Most likely because you are inserting a wet bell onto the stand. Change your liquor... Seriously, you might try to dry things out before you put things away- maybe even run a short 12 ga swab into the bell If it's really a problem. (Sounds like a challenge for Tim W.- "Best Damn Bell Swab Ever") I've had my horn freeze onto the stand a number of times in deep winter but I know you don't have that problem out there.

In case you haven't discovered this by accident by now, here is the solution to trumpets sticking to the rubber knob on trumpet stands.
Go to your favorite liquor store. Buy a fifth of Crown Royal. Open the box, and inside you will find the jug of booze in a beautiful purple flannel sack. Remove the bottle, and place the sack over the stick on the trumpet stand. Apply trumpet. Obtain glass with three ice cubes. Pour about two fingers of booze---enjoy!
Your trumpet will not stick to its stand again. And if it does, you probably won't care.
Also, the purple sack makes a wonderful soft mute.

any craft store (Jo -Ann Fabrics like) will have felt for sale (glue on one side or not) - either add to the felt that is on the stand, or cut yourself a felt donuts that filts far enough down the stand to sit at the base (use the base of the stand as a guide to cut a nice circle)

It all depends upon the bell flare of the horn. They all seem to fit (or not) the stands a little differently. As mentioned above, you can thicken the felts at the bottom which raises the horn up from the bell end, making for less contact with the inner bell surface. Depending on the bell, a little bit may go a long way, so buy some extra at the craft store and plan on experimenting.

Hamilton "Pet Sock" works for me on the rare occasions I have to use a horn stand. And they're cheap.

hi eric

you might want to try the SJ flea market (i used to love that place!!)
and look for a dude that sells fabric.

otherwise try to find a discount fabric store.
i found a joint down here in the hood that i have been buying my
leather remnants from (by the pound) and i saw felt squares yesterday.
i didn't get the price but i seem to remember seeing 50¢ on the box
but that could have been for zippers.........

michael's has the felt squares too as i have bought some there before.
JoAnn Fabrics too. they have discount coupons on their site.

*** i just did a rehearsal with Ed Smith
