Conn Connquest 77A model Cornet 662xxx 1957 #1 Bore .438 5 1/8” bell.
77A Model series was manufactured from 1957-1961. (This is NOT the .485 #2 1/2 bore open wrap 76A.)
Old style valve buttons and caps. Top springs with white nylon valve guide disk. The “gapped” receiver has been adjusted to accept Bach and Warburton backbores with about a .05 gap. (Schilke mouthpieces will not insert fully unless they are shortened. Increasing the gap gives a brassier trumpet sound.) Stainless steel set screws installed in top valve stems to allow easy adjustment of down stroke alignment. Allen wrench included.

2 dents on bell bow – see photos. 1 small dent in bell. Numerous spots in lacquer. Some lacquer discoloration on receiver and receiver brace. Satisfying pop when slides are pulled. Third slide holds compression for a second or two. Slides all free, valve action smooth with La Tromba oil – included. Seems to be the only oil it likes, otherwise it gets fussy.

Playing characteristics when compared to .438 Conn 6B trumpet and .463 bore Yamaha long model cornet using the same top and Warburton 8* and Bach #10 backbores.

76A is smoother in articulation than the 6B with a slightly more veiled sound - perhaps a little more open.

76A is a little brighter than the Yamaha with less veiled but sweeter sound and smoother articulation. Not as open blowing.

Mouthpiece sensitivity. You can use a Denis Wick mouthpiece but it only plays acceptably up to Bb above the staff. Standard Bachs work well and give an “American “ cornet sound. It just loves a Parduba – perhaps for Dixieland. It’s interesting – you have to go back to the early 1900’s or so to find another small bore, large bell, short model Conn cornet.

Original gray/blue tweed scuffed up case.
