Here is another I recently finished up that is FOR SALE! This is a VERY early Shastock Solotone mute. The resonators had to be replaced with new maple due to damage from the previous owner. It was painted multiple colors, broken, and missing the tube when I got it. The tube was replaced with a new brass one in the smaller, better playing size.
Louis Shastock actually used THREE different sizes in the beginning before settling on the one most people are familiar with and this would have had the largest of the three originally which did NOT play very well so it was worth putting the time into repairing. Now it plays like a champ and looks like one too! If you do a lot of shows or vintage music that calls for Solotone mute then THIS is what you want to have.
All the others on the market have been designed to try and emulate these but even the best ones can only come close. The material itself is hard to copy and Louis was a master in this regard. In fact his formula to create the first synthetic drum head was later sold to a company some of you may have heard of - REMO!
