A shining example of Art Deco design and the golden age of American manufacture, the King Silver Tone was the crown jewel of the H.N White Company's manufacture for decades. These instruments were played by many of the best musicians of the 20th century, including Harry James and Nat Adderly.
H.N. White pulled out all the stops when it came to producing these instruments. The bells are spun from sheets of sterling silver (not electroformed, as many modern makers do), which is an incredibly difficult task, but yields a bell with a gorgeous, singing tone. H.N White would then add a hefty bell bead, and finish it off with an Art Deco style engraving. The body of the horn is brass, which really accents the solid silver bell.
This particular instrument is in excellent condition cosmetically, but has some wear to the pistons and a loss of compression consistent with its age. The lacquer appears to be original, and shows some wear at contact points as well as on a few minor repair spots (pictured). Playability is quite good, with a tonal palette ranging from dark and mellow to heraldic and clairon. The sterling bell really adds a dimension of crisp, clear ring to the tone without becoming too bright. This is a fantastic example of one of the best cornets made in the 20th century.
