I am wondering if anyone knows a custom shop that is willing to make a 4-valve flugelhorn. I am very interested in having one so I am able to play cello concertos (that's not the only thing I would use it for, of course). Thanks! _________________ Tyler

Why not buy a production 4-valve horn? I believe there are a few manufacturers that offer one...Getzen, Courtois... _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

That Courtois that Nakariakov plays on is amazing (at least in his hands). _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Hi Trent. Would you happen to have any pictures of this 4 valve flugel? As well do you know the specs on it? Bore size, bell, ect. I might be in the market for a 4 valve.

Just watched the movie about Nakariakov called "No More Wunderkind". You can find the entire hour long film on YouTube. In it he plays and discusses his 4-valve flugel a lot...calls it a wind-cello. And if you haven't heard his "No Limits" CD, you don't know what you're missing. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I saw Nakariakov play the horn here in San Francisco some years ago. Freakin' amazing!
I'm a big fan of Courtois flugels, but one caution: I bought mine in 1986, and the fourth slide assembly is not long enough to pull out to get the low F to Db in tune, they're really sharp. The one that the Russian had is a newer model with a 4th slide that resembles a french horn 1st "F" slide. It works a lot better and is longer. |

You could get a new one from musiciansfriend.com for $2176 with a base price of $2560 and a 15% discount. |

The lacquer on my Chambord II cornet isn't so hot either. |

Hers started coming off within a few weeks of buying it. IT belonged to a band and had been bought at a knock down price so she wasn't too bothered, but it put me off their instruments. Even Bach lacquer is better these days. |

Is Courtois silverplate better than Courtois lacquer? Or, maybe Courtois sells a raw brass horn "protected for shipping with lacquer"? |

Trent,
I thought Sergei's horn had a custom larger (trombone, I think) bell on it. Does Adams offer a larger bell on their 4 valve?
I should know better than to ask these questions, as they inevitably lead me down the path to wallet drainage _________________ 6340S, Connstellation 36B, 38B, 38A, and 28A, Couesnon flugel, Blackburn C, Kanstul/Besson 920 picc, and a HUGE pile of Messina Covers gig bags |

Don't bother with a larger Courtois bell, it's hard enough to find a case for a 6.6" bell. I have a Courtois 155R flugel and Chambord ii and the lacquer still looks like new. both horns are over 5 years old with no lacquer loss. Must be something to do with the vintage.

I can make you one, I have the parts but it would be more expensive than the commercial ones already available. |
