Have been using my friend's student model Yamaha (shepherd's crook) cornet for some time and want to pick up my own "first" cornet. His Yammie is a great little horn and a lot of people say that for the price you can't beat a used Yamaha student cornet. I have also been interested in the Blessing line. Their price is not too bad for a "new" cornet and I hear plays very well. What are your thoughts? Make, model, price, new, used, etc...?? You guys are the experts!! _________________ Jay S.

The Yamaha student cornet is fantastic. I have been known to put down my Maestro (pro Yamaha cornet) and use one of my students instruments, with no problems. |

Broken record time ...
Vintage Olds Ambassador (really great value) -- or any of the vintage Olds cornets. These are wonderful horns!

You can't go wrong with the Yamaha Student Model ( YCR-2330II) I picked up one on ebay & the only thing I've liked better was a Getzen Eterna. I was playing 4th Solo Cornet in a Brass Band & the Yamaha worked great..
I really want to try one of the Prestige or Maestro Yamaha's but the are hard to find here in the US. Hopefully I'll be adding a refurbished YCR261 Eb Soprano to my collection soon.
It's Great to have a Cornet Forum

I've never blown an Olds Ambassador cornet, but I do own an Ambassador trumpet. Does the Ambassador cornet compare every bit as favorably with pro cornets as some of you believe the Ambassador trumpet does with pro trumpets? _________________

I've been watching ebay for good Ambassador cornets and when clean ones arise they seem to get bid pretty competitively. However, from what I've seen, Reynolds cornets tend to be quite a lot cheaper and may have also been made by Olds????
Can anyone comment on the relative merits and ranking between the Olds and Reynolds models e.g. Ambassador vs Medallist and Special vs Emperor. I noticed on the Olds Central site http://rouses.net/trumpet/olds.htm that, at least in 1973 pricelists, the models which I've listed against each other were equally priced.
Thanks,
Pugs
