Philip Cobb is undoubtedly one of the finest trumpet players of his generation and as Joint Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, in succession to Maurice Murphy, continues an outstanding heritage. Some of the music on this album is completely new, some has been written especially for him while others are well-known favourites. Despite the diversity, each piece has an association or special meaning for him. Combine that with his essentially lyrical performances and you have Songs from the Heart.
The major work on this album is The Maestro, a concertino for trumpet and brass band by the exciting young film composer, Andrew Pearce. Andrew approached the task of writing the concertino with all of his professional skills, absorbing the very essence of Maurice Murphy’s career, Philip’s virtuosity and the sound of The International Staff Band, listening to them on disc and in rehearsal. What emerged is an attractive and substantial tour de force in one movement, painting a picture of Maurice’s life as a trumpet player, fully utilising Philip’s outstanding abilities and making considerable demands on the band. Enamoured with their outstanding collaboration, as a bonus, Andrew penned the charming, but brief, Interlude.
The accompaniment to Philip is provided by The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army throughout, conducted by Philip's father, Stephen.
Songs from the Heart will be available at the World of Brass trade stand in the door 6 foyer of the Royal Albert Hall, London this Saturday (20th October) during the National Brass Band Championships.
