I would advise any aspiring trumpet major to seriously consider Cal State Long Beach.
My daughter just graduated with a bassoon performance major and I attended graduation ceremonies on Friday. I was stunned by the magnificent playing of the CSLB brass choir, conducted by Bob Frear. The four trumpets and low brass members played solidly, in-your-face fanfare music for the processional, with lines repeatedly ascending to high "F," which lasted well over a half hour as the hundreds of graduates marched slowly to their seats. There was no pause and there were no rests, although I'm sure they spelled one another. Didn't hear a single cracked note or one not supported with the most beautiful, fat sound.
When I spoke about this to Mr. Frear, he said, "That's because I'm their teacher!" No false modesty here. Mr. Frear formerly played principal with the L.A. Philharmonic and plays tons of studio sessions, including "Star Wars" and "Family Guy."
Two great jazz trumpeters, Jeff Jarvis and Kye Palmer also teach at the school.
I have no complaints about my time at North Texes, but with teachers like this and proximity to all the music that L.A. offers, I can't think of another school that I'd rather attend than CSLB if I could do it again.
...and all for a fraction of the cost of crosstown rivals UCLA and USC. |

Congrats to your daughter, Mark. Layer that experience with that of yours as an educator and fine musician, she couldn't lose.
Maybe my old high school friend, David Sogg will retire from the Pittsburgh Symphony and she'll get you seats at Steeler games!
All the best,

Professor Frear is a wonderful teacher, artist, and person. I'm glad you had such a positive experience with him and hearing his students. I'm not surprised. He has quite a fantastic studio. _________________ Jason Bergman

That was the name, when I went there. Dr, John Green was the music dept head. I got my education in a practice room. My teacher was a girl in the percussion section....never to be forgotten. |
