I haven't been to an ITG conference since 1975. (life happened) I am consideriing going this year. Who among you are planning/thinking about going? _________________ Music is a fire in your belly, fighting to get out. You'd better put a horn in the way before someone gets hurt. |

Me. I didn't go last year because Miami in July sounded too hot for me. _________________ Pat Shaner

I'm a comeback player (25+ years off) of probably average capability. I want to go, but here is what I see I get for my money:
- A half day clinic dedicated for comeback players like me
- A chance to make ears cringe trying out many horns in the vendor displays
- Several concerts, depending on my length of stay
In all seriousness, what does ITG offer to make it worth my while? I am want to want to go, but at the moment, I am on the fence to justify the conference cost + hotel cost + food cost + travel cost (which would be modest for me this year). _________________ Stephen

Even though I'm an amateur player, I've received immense benefits from the clinics and master classes at the conferences. The non-pro content is wonderful, but don't sell yourself short by skipping the sessions that are geared toward working professionals! _________________ Steve Thiel |

That's a fair question. The conference fee, hotel room, travel costs...all add up. Here's why I think it is a worthwhile cost:
The many lectures and clinics are taught by top players/teachers. They can offer insights that improve your playing, musical interpretation, how you choose your gear, etc. In some cases, it might be your only opportunity to get access to that teacher. If you leave the conference with three ideas, exercises or approaches to your practice and trumpet playing that make you better, I'd say that the cost was a very good investment.
In addition, the concerts, recitals and other performances are terrific. You'll hear top players playing a wide range of music.
Finally, the exhibition spaces are incredible (and loud!). There isn't a music store anywhere in the world that comes remotely close to offering the amazing variety of horns, mutes, mouthpieces, music, and trumpet-related accessories that you'll find there. |

The horns and a chance to talk to the makers and see for yourself the differences in the designs and brands. A chance to get top repairmen to do work as you wait or during the stay. An excellent chance to compare your range to a large selection of people trying to be the reincarnation of Bud Brisbois (seriously take ear protection for the trade show). See every gizmo and do dad in the trumpet world and try them too. Talk to the guys who make mouthpieces and ask why things work. Listen to some of the best play. Meet other people who share your very specific obsession (varied to say the least). Play the things you can’t afford, find cheaper horns that do play. Check out Ohio State. Make a contact for a job. Your money your decision, but it’s a good time for a trumpet player.

I think there might be more students there this year. Last year, when they held it in the summer, a lot of summer music festivals and camps were already in session. That's why my kid (who had to miss Nakariakov, WAAAAHHHH) couldn't go last year. He's hoping to go this year, bringing along another kid, too. They're both hoping to win scholarships.
I went with him to Hershey, a few years ago, and it was just an incredible experience, just to be there as a parent escort for a kid. |

Thinking I might attend this. I'll be CONUS and home almost all of May.
Why not?

Scodwell USA will be exhibiting the full line of trumpets and flugelhorns at the Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center display. The new "Euro" flugelhorn, the four valve piccolo, the "Las Vegas" Bb, the "Boston" Bb and the brand new flugelhorn which is replacing the previous model that was widely accepted worldwide. I invite you all to come by and say hello, try my horns and talk shop. Columbus is a great venue for the best gathering of trumpet players and exhibiters.

I had posted earlier that Scodwell USA would be exhibiting at this years ITG in Columbus. At this point I would hope the organizers might make a decision on whether the convention is still on in view of the coronavirus threat worldwide. Here in Las Vegas conventions are huge business and many have cancelled. Airlines have stopped many overseas flights and cut back on domestic flights as well. As much as I would like to think much of this has been overblown, think of hundreds of trumpet players blowing thru everybody horns and handling them without much sanitizing if any. I'm as careful as anybody but this does concern me.
