I’m looking for more big band music to listen to. I’ve been listening to JALC and Harry Connick.
Any recommendations? |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_big_bands
My choice should be to start with the vintage ones: the early Fletcher Henderson and then the 1928 Duke Ellington and a lot after that (he is by far the greatest).
Try a little bit of the white orchestras of Paul Whiteman( the recordings with Bix) then a little bit of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. A bit of Count Basie ( not MY favorite) , some Stan Kenton for the taste.
For modern there is a lot of Maynard Ferguson, the very funny Dizzy big band (Carnegie Hall), very good also the Miles recordings with Gil Evans'orchestra (Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain).
For super perfection listen to Play well with others by Wayne Bergeron.
And there are so many more, you won't believe it.
Also recently a lot of the WDR bigband on https://www.facebook.com/wdrbigband
and a lot of less known work on the facebook Big Bands Only page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/225366604611580
And this is an European present, recorded in Holland in a radio studio (mixed European/American big band), really nice, original music:

Listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9uOlLPzJPI
a tune that was recorded by Benny Goodman already late 1930s. Which you might compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7fARRnhWSg
In addition to the fine recommendations by Delano I suggest you try to get a copy of an old book: The Big Bands by Georg T Simon; Schirmer Books 1981;
Big bands as a concept is pretty unspecific! If you want to follow the development I suggest you start early 1930s; bands like Don Redman, Andy Kirk (and his 12 Clouds of Joy), Fletcher Henderson, Jimmy Lunceford (whose style of arranging seems similiar to that of Billy May, Basie, then Goodman, Basie, Miller. Dorsey etc etc etc.
One of my own favourites when it comes to perfection is the Ted heath band (Swing is King, Decca).
But there is an abundance of bands!
Personally I´ve played in a 13 piece swing band since 1968, today also in a modern big band - there is a huge difference in the sound!!!!
So discover and enjoy! _________________ Cornets: mp 143D3/ DW Ultra 1,5 C

One of my all time favorites is the Woody Herman Big Band. Check out the Hydrant and Heavy Exposure albums. A couple of my favorite albums right there.
For modern check out Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band and also John Fedchock Big Band.
I also have to mention Maynard. Specifically MF Horn 4&5. Simply phenomenal.

I agree with Delano that Duke Ellington is, by far, the best big band. But if you really want to be impressed and/or depressed, check out James Morrison's "Snappy Too," wherein the famed Australian trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist plays an entire big band BY HIMSELF (and a drummer). It's frankly ludicrous in the best of ways. _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

That Tonight Show Band arrangement of In The Mood is just incredible. Far and away better than the original, in my opinion at least. Helps to have one of the most incredible lineups to ever play together in those seats, I suppose, but wow. They could play a little. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

For current big bands, you can't do much better than Maria Schneider, imo. |

Everyone should really go deep into Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Those are the cornerstones in my opinion. |
