Hello, I am new to this forum and mainly just created an account to share an important piece of knowledge I just discovered.

I was choking on a piece of gum, but in my panic I instinctively contracted my abdominals, expelling the air similar to that of a C above the staff. To my surprise, the gum came shooting out. I was shocked at first, but then it all made sense. The Heimlich maneuver essentially acts to physically force the air out of a person's lungs, where the pressure forces the food particle out. However, I realized that trumpet players can do this by themselves nature of the resistance that is required to play trumpet, especially for high notes. It was at this moment that I realized trumpet players are immune to choking (as long as they don't panic and forget how to properly compress air). Training abs I guess would also help.

TL;DR
If you are choking, force air as if you were playing a fortissimo C above staff.

So the takeaway here is don’t swallow your gum, right?

Your epiphany only works if the lungs are full of air, not empty after an exhale.

Well, generally people always have a little bit of air left in their lungs. Or else technically, the Heimlich wouldn't work either. Plus, I'm sure we've all had to squeeze out high notes with a less-than-full breath.

Also, I don't think anyone ever intentionally chokes lol.

In that case, you don't swallow but you still suck?
