This is the latest book I'm reading in my quest to be a better player.
Just about finished reading this book, but it is sooooo far from useful as skills are concerned.
It's a cool book if you are looking for stories about life in a band and/or life on the road.
However, I'm looking for a autobiography/biography of a trumpet player and his/her story about HOW they became a "PRO"
Like how many hours they spent in the practice rooms. How many gigs they were denied because they weren't good enough. Weather or not they went to "college" etc...
Something like How I became a Cornetist.
Next on my agenda is...
“HORN OF PLENTY..THE STORY OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG”..BY ROBERT GOFFIN _________________ TTFN

Not a "bad" book, but not what I was looking for!
It is a good book if you want to hear/read what it is like to be on-the-road, but not much there as to how Wynton made it or even is routine now.
Still by far, the best read yet is... How I became a Cornetist.
You can order it from LaBlanc for like $5 with shipping!!!
Still looking for something like it...
Next on my plate, if the e-bay seller ever sends it....

Have you Read Miles Davis' autobiography? It doesn't have too much in the way of technical stuff, other than vague references like "I went home and practiced those chord changes all night" or "I could play all Dizzy's licks", but it's a great read. I think Timofei Dokshizer has written a memoirs; there are probably books on or by Maurice Andre, too.
Try doing a google search on some famous players and the words books, biography, autobiography. Hope that helps. |

Oz,
A friend of mine did his doctoral dissertation on Miles. He spent a lot of time with Quincy Troupe (who co-wrote/ghost-wrote Miles' autobiography). He said that the publishers edited out literally hundreds of pages from the manuscript. They took out every single thing that talked technically about the music, how it was conceived, how it was prepared, etc. They hoped the book would be a best-seller to non-musicians and thought that too much shop talk would turn the civilians off.
I would absolutely love to get my hands on the unedited version!!! |

PH,
wow, I'd love to get my hands on the unedited version, too!
You know, I'm wondering how many non-musicians read Miles' autobiography anyway? I bet if they released a book of all the technical stuff they edited out it would almost certainly be a best seller with musicians. I wonder what happened to all that stuff? It would be a shame to lose such a valuable insight into Miles' music.

which book about Miles?
I think I saw at least three different titles when I was browsing the shelf’s.
So far all have been a let-down technically speaking. Even Clarks book, but his was the deepest yet.
Anywho...
Got o get back to reading.
My Armstrong book finally arrived today, but I've already read three chapters on Brownie... _________________ TTFN
