What a gas!!
Just flipping through the forums, and here's an entire forum dedicated to the greatest legit player of all time, IMOHO.
While I can't think of a single bad recording, the one that stands out above all others to me is 'One Fine Day' from Madame Butterfly. When you hear Mendez do one of those mad crazy 32nd note triple tongued 40 measure runs, you know this is just insane technique. When he does a ballad, such as OFD, it is easy to under appreciate the amount of skill that goes into it. I have heard this same song played for over 30 years, and it still amazes me. |

The album Trumpet Extraordinary has three of my favorites back-to-back:
1. Dark Eyes,
2. Hora Staccato, and
3. Valse Bluette
The rest of the album's selections are all top notch.
This is the album on which his sons Ralph and Robert join in on several cuts. _________________ Trumpets: 1952 Conn 22B NYS, 1972 Conn 6B Victor

Some of you may be interested in an album I just recorded as a tribute to Mendez. I play numerous Mendez solos with piano that he never recorded, as well as TICO-TICO, DANCE OF THE HOURS, JOTA NO. 2, ROMANZA, and others.
Recorded at the home studio of Arturo Sandoval, I recorded duets with Arturo on LA VIRGEN DE LA MACARENA, ZIGEUNERWISEN, and HABANERA, plus he plays percussion on some other tunes with me.
Mendez trios such as THE BRAVE MATADOR, JUMPING BEAN, ESPANA CANI, TRE-MENDEZ POLKA, GALLITO, and KIKO are plyed in combinations with me, Arturo, Wayne Bergeron, Jim Wilt, Robert Karon, and Jens Lindemann. What a blast we had when Bob Mendez dropped by to listen to some of he sessions. We conclude the CD with my arrangement of THE LIGHTNING TRUMPET for six trumpets and piano, a wild ride with double Cs and higher!
The album will be release by Summit Records in February, but I may have copies for sale in November. We have now finished editing, and mastering is next week. It is a way to hear some great players plus eleven first recordings. Twenty-two tracks total.
My gratitude to Arturo and Marianela for hosting my wife Miriam and I for a few days earlier this month. They have a beautiful home in Hidden Hills (Los Angeles) on three acres. It is a time we will always treasure.

Yeah, Mendez recorded it as a solo, but made a version for three trumpet and orchestra. According to Bob Mendez, the trio version was never performed. I took that version and incorporated some of the orchestral accompaniment into the other trumpet parts, plus made a piano reduction.
It was technically very challenging because all of us played the fast runs in unison. |

My personal favorites are Scherzo in D and Moto Perpetuo. I can't wait for this CD to be released! Seriously, what a dream team for a recording! _________________ 2nd Trumpet, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra

I always thought Dance of the Comedians was one of his best. It showcased his tremendous technique, his lyrical side, and (of course) that excitement he brought to his playing that few have matched.
