I haven't posted in this forum before, but this looks like the place for this topic. I submitted this to the TPIN list several years ago.
When I was a senior in High School, my very best friend had a little brother who was a freshman and marched in the trumpet section. I spent a lot of time with him, encouraging him, including him, and taking him under my wing. Their Dad was a bicycle frame manufacturer and crafted some of the most amazing professional racing frames I had ever seen (along with some absolutely fantastic paint jobs).
At the end of the marching season, my friend's little brother presented me with a gift. It was a Perrier water bottle mute that had been sand blasted and hand painted by his father. It had my full name painted in red and outlined in black so that it was perfectly spaced circumferentially around the "wide" part of the bottle. It has some intricate floral work on it from top to bottom making this a true work of art. At the bottom was painted "Thanks for all your extra help! Stuart Laing". It had corks that were more substantial than anything on a "store-bought" mute.
I have it sitting prominently on a shelf in my practice room. It is A TREASURE!

Tom,
Actually, it's not bad. Glass is somewhere between a metal mute and a felt mute from a sound perspective (the mezzo mute!). The intonation is pretty good, but it's quite heavy for a straight mute (easily as heavy as my JoRal Copper Harmon). It's a conversation piece more than anything else, but it really does play!

I will need some help figuring out how to do this!
I have a Wind Ensemble rehearsal this evening and a friend in the group has a digital camera. I've asked him to bring his camera to snap some pictures of my mute, and then he can email them to me.
So at that point I will have a front and back view of the mute in digital format attached to an email message. What do I need to do to post these images on this web site? I don't have a web page, and really don't want to have to get one to just post these images. Maybe if I sent these pictures to someone here, you could post them for me?
Look for images of my mute soon! _________________ Derek Reaban

I had my Wind Ensemble concert last night and my friend brought his digital camera. He emailed the pictures to me this morning (three views that turned out really well).
If any of you would be willing, I will forward this message to you, and if you could figure out how to post it here, that would be great (I know I won't be able to figure it out otherwise). _________________ Derek Reaban

I was looking for some photos on my computer and bumped into these (can't believe I posted this almost 9 years ago). The person who had hosted the pictures had taken them down, so I'm reposting them in my photobucket account. Thought those of you that weren't on the site 9 years ago would enjoy seeing them. _________________ Derek Reaban

Can it still hold liquids? It looks like it could replace my lost and lamented "Scod-Well" stealth flask "mute." |

It sure does. Sounds like you're looking for the four-cork version of this mute! _________________ Derek Reaban

I just bought a Scodwell trumpet the other day. This sounds like a "must have" accessory. Does Tony make these also ???????? Could come in handy for those "4" set gigs. _________________ Marty
