I picked up this recording a few weeks ago and man... he does this really short version of Stardust (little over 3 minutes) and he sounds INCREDIBLE. I'm surprised more people don't talk about Donald Byrd's fantastic tone and technical ability. He really does the song justice. It is my 2nd or 3rd favorite version of the tune next to Clifford's and Louis Armstrong's. _________________ Eric M. Brewington

Ya got good taste, Eric. I saw Dr. Byrd perform with some of his college students in a night spot in Boston some years ago (c. 1975) and that did it for me. The guy just blew me away. His students were fantastic as well. The CD you mention is one I'm not familiar with but I'll check it out.

Hi Eric,
What label was that recording made on, and is it available (new or used) on compact disc? |

Yeah Donald Byrd is a great player...Very under rated in my opinion. I've never heard this version of Star Dust...My personal favorites are Clifford's and Doc Severinsen's though...And Louis Smith's. |

BLUES IN TRINITY---On my studio CD this morn.
Dizzy Reece and the great Donald Bryd!..
Wow! what a performance by these two great trumpeters joined together by the Tubby Hayes on tenor, during the height of their careers...
Dizzy Reece and Don Byrd on trumpet!
This was recorded in London on Aug. 1958 at Decca. This CD is a re-issue with beautiful quality on Blue Note # 32093
Don Byrd said: Miles thought Dizzy was the most amazing talent that if he were to live in NYC....He would in short order, become the one of the most popular and best trumpeters in the world.
Anyhoo, Don Byrd and Dizzy made this a amazing keeper of a CD. It is laced with both high energy bop and some really great ballad stuff.
When Don teamed with fellow trumpet colleagues...
Special memorial music always seem to be the result, huh?
Such as
Groovin with Nat (Byrd-Little Johnny Coles
3 Trumpets (Farmer-Byrd-Suliman
Blues in Trinity-Dizzy Reece and Donald Byrd..
and the list goes on...for those of us who just love these Icons who have crossed over.
What companions these greats are for a back ground to my "DROP-DEAD ART PROJECT" here the B |

Donald is one of my favorites too. If you get a chance, check out Elmo Hope's "The All-Star Sessions" This recording features Donald, along with Paul Chambers John Coltrane, Frank Foster, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Philly Joe, Blue Mitchell and Hank Mobley. Also of note, a portion of the recordings were produced by Bob Weinstock and the other portion by Orin Keepnews. Great recording!! |
