Ah, but now for the sticking point.

Define what air control is and how you do it . . . .

Don't forget aperture control.

"Air and aperture" well.

Well said. If the corners are weak, the air will just produce a fffttt, no matter how fast it's moving......

The next time any of us are lucky enough to see Doc Severinsen in concert, bring along a pair of binoculars. Focus on his face, specifically how he sets his corners. At 76, he can still blow us all away........

firm corners
relaxed center
fast air

I saw Doc a couple of years ago in Denver. It was called swinging with Doc. He was struggling and still sounded better than anyone else. What a great sound and range he has.

On one of my two embouchures I can circular breathe on a double C. Not very well mind you, but can take a breath or two while sustaining or "shaking" the note. In order to do this my lungs must at some point be inhaling, not blowing. So much for breath control having anything to do with the production of high notes.

What about tongue level? Nobody's talking about that. My tongue level increases the velocity of the air... I think that's what's happening. Then it's a matter of getting my lips together closely enough and creating compression toward the center (aperture). Having said this... I still can't play above an F above the staff. I'm persistent though. Is there something I'm leaving out?

Also... it's easier for me to play higher if I'm doing exercises in the Remington or BE book. HOW COME? I think actually the answer to that is air control. In order to play the exercises in the book I have to control the air. The same thing applies to playing the notes in isolation... Trouble is... I can't hit them in isolation, but I can when I play them in the method books. HOWEVER, there seems to be a positive correlation between my hitting range and my playing range. As one increases, so does the other.

Buzz,

I agree! This past week or so I have been experimenting with my tongue. I found the other day that I could do a lip trill on high c & d by using my tongue.
