What piece do you Bach 3C players use for the really high lead parts? I know it's not really good to switch mouthpieces but what should a player do that sounds great on a 3C up to a high C and D but needs to take it on up? Just work harder on the 3C or use a different piece for lead? It seems logical that a 3D would be a great idea but the 3D doesn't seem to be very popular with 3C players from most posts I've read. Suggestions?

Bach offers a 3D, 3E, and 3F- each progressively more shallow.

Perhaps you should pick up an Arturo Sandoval CD and hear the capabilities of a 3C.

The 3D doesn't seem to have the same rim as the 3C.. so if your going to change rims anyway.. try a Bob reeves 42es.

3F has the same rim as the 3C, that's why they put this piece out some years ago. Bob's 42 rim is quite different from the Bach 3C, and if you want the same rim on everything and you like the 3C use the 3F for a more commercial sound. Bobby Hamilton (Lead for Steve and Edie, Vegas) has used one for years.

I second the Sandoval CD...I recommend Hot House or download the song "A Mis Abuelos". The capabilities of a 3C are great. And btw, the 3C is actually the cup depth of a 5D or in between a 5C and D. So to have to struggle on it is not a good sign.

smithwatkinsguy:

The song "A mis abuelos" is in the album Danzon . I agree with you, the song "A mis abuelos" is an excellent example of Arturo's lead playing on a 3C.

14A4A will work for some 3C types, may be a bit shallow for others.....but all in all a great piece.

I think the question is moot. I used a 3C for years before switching to my Marcinkiewicz C5, then and now I used a Marcinkiewicz E14 for lead playing. Did the switch cause me problems? No. About a year ago I changed my approach to lead playing (less pressure more air) and now I'm hitting double C with some consistency and am screaming double G on demand.

However, there's another guy I play with at times who uses a different size for lead playing and he plays out of this world (slightly smaller). But I know a guy who plays for Minnesota Brass who screams on his mouthpiece and he uses a 1C. So unfortunately I'm afraid in the trumpet world that size does not matter. FIT matters.

Don't worry about switching at any rate, Bobby Shew advocates "The right tool for the job" so I assume he uses different equippment for different playing scenarios.
