I have an odd situation that I can't figure out. My normal setup is a Kanstul 1500A with a GR66M. As is my habit from time to time, I pull out old mouthpieces to remind myself why I switched to my GR. Down deep in my box, I found a Warburton 3SV cup attached to a Series 80 BKT backbore, and pulled it out for a try.

When I put it into the receiver, the shank was just slightly too short to make a snug fit. This was caused by the mass of the Series 80. But I thought I'd blow it just for fun.

To my surprise the horn produced a rich, mellow and large sound with less effort and transitions were made easier. How could this be with a mouthpiece that didn't fit. If I turn the horn upside down, the mouthpiece will fall out.

So what's going on? Does the sligthly larger gap have something to do with it? Does the extra mass of the mouthpiece make that much difference? Is it all in my head?

Any help appreciated.

Umm...I have no clue about that but I don't think the gap will give you a mellow, large sound, just better slotting and such. And how in the world did you get a large, mellow sound on a 3SV? The 3SV I tried I got a thin, pinched as hell sound with no range below low C.

Thanks for the help. You wrote:

I just finished playing for a couple of hours with a friend and he thought the horn sounded brighter with more overtones when I used the Warbuton with the heavy shank. It's a bit strange, but I 'll keep playing with it and see how things go. As far as getting a big, mellow sound with the 3SV, it just happens. I have good response down to low F# and can play the petals down to C. You'd think it would favor the upper range but I haven't noticed it doing so.

I also checked out the Schilke site and it was helpful.

i was wondering, do those Monette horns with the integral mouthpiece (samadi) have any gap at all?
