I hung streamers from it and decorated it all up for my old HS's homecoming parade. I even wore face paint and the whole bit. I wanna put some lights on it this X-mas, haha! _________________ Adam Zwebti

I don't know if basketball and hockey games count as "special occasions," but when I was in Spartan Brass (basketball and hockey bands for Michigan State), we did all sorts of things to trick out our horns. The worst, perhaps, was a dunkin donuts box wrapped around the bell between the flare and valve block--ostensibly to irritate Robert "Tractor" Traylor of U of Michigan Basketball Infamy. Usually, though, the practice was to stick variations of green and white pom poms. Some people did Christmas lights around that time of year (don't know how they did it, but it worked) and at other times of the year/occasion strange adornments would appear mimicking the team in question, i.e. hanging mascots, gators, etc... Ahhh...college days... |

Bright orange fuzzy balls strung together (bought in an Indian trinket shop) hang from my bell on funk gigs. Have also used ankle bells (the kind belly dancers use) in more avant-garde settings. Nothing for my jazz quintet though.
The bells have an interesting effect... If I play loud enough, they resonate a bit. Very cool. And having them strapped on doesn't dampen the sound nearly as much as I thought. The orange fuzzies are tied onto the tuning slide with string that's about the thickness of dental floss, so it doesn't affect the sound or feel at all. Both are more for me than the audience, though everyone loves the fuzzies...

No.
I've always found that where I play during the holidays are far too formal to do stuff like that. If it works for you, great. I just don't feel the need, nor would my audience appreciate it.

I found a great one for Christmas – a Santa hat over the bell.
It has taken me years to find a bucket mute I am happy with and when I do – it’s red with a fluffy white bit on the end! |

I'm with riffdawg, all my trumpet needs is a good polishing. I'll leave the decorated trumpet stuff to Mr. Monette. |

My horn IS the decoration.
But while we're on the topic, I did notice Doc Cheatham had some sort of dangly jewelry on the third slide of his horn. Has anyone else seen that or know what it is? |

hey,
The only thing that will go on my trumpet is my rookie feather for chiefs. I will tie that around the tuning slide and let that hang there all season. It means a great deal to me.

Many years ago I bought a small string of lights for 59 cents that I hang accross the trumpet section stands during the holiday season. Gets a lot of good comments. I keep these cheap lights in my stand bag which gets thrown around, stacked on and everything else. These cheap lights don't quit. I spend a lot of money for lights at home, and they last one year, maybe. John |
