Does anyone know if the actual RM recording on the Trumpet Magic album was done by splicing or done in one take? I have spoken to someone who claims to have seen RM perform Moto Perpetuo as an encore to a night's concert. Apparently he could double tongue and circular breathe. But, for whatever reason, was the recording spliced? |

I believe it was done in one take, no splicing. I will check my LP notes to be sure.....
RM was a player who could play flawlessly live; and sound as well as any recording... A relative Short list of soloist trumpet players who actually can do that would have to include Maurice Andre, Herbert Clark, Doc, Harry James, Wynton Marsalis,

Thanks, Kent for that link and thanks DH for the information.
I don't know if he ever performed this in concert, but I know it is exhausting to listen to on the recording. Very impressive and thrilling.... but exhausting. _________________ Russ Chapman

He did do it in concerts, but not all that often because it killed his lips (4.5 mins. nonstop!). There are a few programs in the Rafael Mendez Library with it on them. Unfortuntely, the library does not contain any live performances of it. |
