|
|
Starting this week, I'm going to be giving weekly improvisation tips on my blog http://jasonklobnak.com/blog and wanted to invite all of you to check it out. The plan is to have a different tip up every week throughout the year and to have them posted on Mondays.
Some of the tips will be coming from my book, "Targeting: Improvisation with Purpose" (which you can find out more about at the link below in my signature). However, I'll be posting useful tips that aren't from my book as well. I'll be covering a wide variety of topics within the world of improvisation and hope they help others as much as they've helped me. _________________ Improvisation Masterclass info: https://bit.ly/2U6im2V

Week #2 is up! I'm going to be spending a few weeks on the topic of Rhtyhm. Check out the blog, http://jasonklobnak.com/blog today. Thanks to everyone that has checked it out and left such kind messages...I hope they continue to help everyone on their musical journey!
Also, thanks again to everyone that's purchased my book (for more information, you can click on the below)! The reviews have been fantastic and I'll put some of those up too. The book is going to be featured in the August edition of "Teaching Music" that MENC produces and hopefully there will be a review coming up shortly in one of the ITG journals.

Hey Everyone-Week #4 is up! This is the last week on the rhythm series, so I'm talking about "Rhythmic Quoting" this week. You can check it out by going to http://jasonklobnak.com/blog
I know with my students that this rhythm series has been helpful to them-so I hope it's helpful to others here on TH as well. It's been suggested that I put up audio examples for all of the musical examples that I've been putting up. It's been a busy week, but I'm hoping to get audio or video examples up on the blog soon.

Thanks vprestwood!
Week #6 is up! This week I'm talking about how we can use pentatonics to creatively target notes. I'm thinking this might be a new series too (similar to what I did on the "rhythm series"). You can go to http://jasonklobnak.com/blog to check it out.
Thanks to everyone here on TH for the great feedback on the blog (as well as the book)! I'm hoping to get a video reviews/commercial put up soon as well.

Jason,
This is a great resource and I like your explanation of "targeting". Nice post on pentatonics as well. There are so many options, but I like playing the minor pentatonic from the third (or major pentatonic from the fifth) over major chords as well. It's an inside sound and you avoid the root.
I teach a modal class at the Nashville Jazz Workshop and we were working on the majb6 pentatonic the other night for all the chords derived from Melodic Minor. Pentatonics are great as they provide you with a lot of structure in your ideas.
Keep em coming!

Thanks Matt!
Yeah, there's so many things you can do with Pentatonics that go beyond the stereotypical "Pentatonic" sound. Since I'm doing a series on Pentatonics-this next week will be about the majb6. These can be great sources to draw on, especially when you combine them with other targeting devices.
By the way, Matt, I'm really digging your blog on visualization too. I think everyone should check it out.

Week #7 is up! I decided to talk about the Minor Pentatonic with the Major 6th (or Insen) instead of the major with the b6. Maybe that will be next week's topic in this Pentatonic Series. Be sure to check it out at http://jasonklobnak.com/blog and feel free to share the link/blog via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc. I've had some great feedback on this current series...keep them coming and be sure to leave some feedback in the comment section (not that I don't enjoy the emails)!
This week I'll finally be putting up some of the reviews from my book- Targeting: Improvisation with Purpose. I've been meaning to do it, but have thankfully been busy and get distracted everytime I think about sitting down and updating it.

Week #8 is up on the blog! We're continuing the pentatonic series and this week I'm talking about the major pentatonic with the flat 6th and how we can use it to creatively target notes.
You can check it out at http://jasonklobnak.com/blog. Also, if you haven't already, check out the short web commercial in the post above that I did for my book, Targeting: Improvisation with Purpose.
I hope these tips continue to be helpful and look forward to hearing your comments! Please feel free to share the blog via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc!
