He's the best trumpeter I've ever seen... by far the most technically proficient and MUSICALLY inspiring.

Sergei certainly is an incredible trumpet player!
He will be touring the US this year, performing with several symphony orchestras.
For those of you in the Phoenix area, he'll be here in January, performing the Arutunian Concerto with The Phoenix Symphony.
I dont know any other dates, but seem to recall several are scheduled, there was quite a discussion about him on TPIN a few weeks back.
Anyone else know where he's going to perform this year in the US?

Yes, and he is certainly a performer that will be heard from in the future. Technically great and will get better and I am sure with the talent he has he will get even better musically.
Also, I can't carry his horn case.

His sound is so beutiful. I'm personally shocked that trumpeters don't talk about him more. he is truely great, just amazing. When i first heard him I couldn't believe how great he is. I's almost like as if God sent him from Heaven. _________________ Jorge Ayala Jr: Trumpeter/Producer

From the little I've heard of Sergei's playing, I've liked Wynton's CoV better. Though Sergei was popping the accents on the last movement like you'd never believe, it wasn't quite as fluid as Wynton playing the last movement, almost more percussive and labored. Of course, this was listening to about 15 seconds of Sergei's playing AND listening to him low-fi, so I'm not much of an expert when it comes to him.
Another question, what are Sergei's plans for the future? Is he persuing a career as a soloist like Maurice Andre or will he try to break into a major orchestra? I'm just curious to find out more so than anything so I can say, "I heard of him first!" |

Not bashing orchestra players at all because that's what I want to do, but he would almost be wasting his talents if he decided to go the orchestral route. His technique and effortlessness make him an amazing soloist that few can play up to. The only thing I haven't been impressed with on some recordings is his musicality, but he's still young and will undoubtedly refine it as he matures. _________________ Matt Cyr

For anyone else who's in Japan, Sergei will be in Toyama Nov. 25 (I believe). Also, what about his playing on Moto Perpetuo (It blows Wynton's out of the water / and he's half his age)? Come on people, double-tonguing AND circular breathing. I think we have a
Vizzutti 2.0 on our hands.
P.S. The CSO will be in Tokyo at the end of Oct.
P.S.S. Zubin Mehta and the Israeli Philharmonic will also be here Nov. 30th. |

Wasn't it Rafael Mendez who circle-breathed and double-tounged the whole thing, or did Vizzutti do that too? _________________ Trumpet: Bach 180LR, 72 bell

i dont think vizzuti has done it. mendez did it circular and double. Sergei doubled tounged and cut and pasted sections. Wyntons is very nice slurred but i think their was some studio magic in there. _________________ Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

Anyone heard the horn concerto that Sergei does on flugel? It sounds more like a horn than a flugel! Check it out, it's pretty incredible. _________________ Matt Cyr
