to know what types of mutes he used. I try to 'poorly' play along and would at least like to get that sound. Does anyone know what type mutes he used, manufacturer, model etc?

It doesn't matter what type of mute he played on, his sound would come through on anything.

Miles, in his later years particularly, used mostly heavy copper Harmon mutes....always without the stem and played very close to the microphone. That gives the sort of dull sound that beboppers like!

Now that I think back on it, I don't remember Miles ever using another kind of mute...just the Harmon.

I have seen some early recordings of the band with Wayne/Herbie/Ron/Tony where the harmon he's using seems to be longer (fit more into the bell). Looked really odd.

Miles may have done some cup mute work with Bird.

As I type this...I am listening to Chicago Public radio's archive broadcast from the Memorial Special.
Check out these beautiful recordings:

and the wonderful slide show of Miles..at

These programs are "priceless" not only for background here at work but for Miles fans...this is pure solid Gold.

What mute does Miles use on Solar? It doesn't sound like a Harmon. I first thought it was a cup mute, but the more I listen, it doesn't have enough edge for a cup. Perhaps a bucket?
