In my quest for the magic horn I've had the joy of owning a few horns. Not as many as the serious collectors around here but enough to learn a little. I've actually managed to break even in my quest. But few horns excite me like the prospect of this one. I probably bid too much for it but I just couldn't help myself. It looks to be in pretty good shape with minimal laquer wear . What ya'll think? (Bruce I know what you think. (TL-5/2) But horns are like women. I need to date around a little before I commit. lol)

Tim, I like it. I've never had the chance to play one but I have a hunch I will soon. I've heard very good things about the Recording. I understand they have a very nice warm tone. Let me know when you get it I'll be over. _________________ Dan

So that was you Tim, I've been watching that for a while now; I was considering a snipe on this one but decided not to. Very nice horn good luck with it. Let us know how you like it, I know you'll love it. _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

Just thought I would butt in here. I played Olds Recording for a while in the Air Force Band years ago. This horn looks to be in excellent condition and was probably overhauled at some point. You can expect the horn to be bright sounding. This not necessarily bad, of course, if that is the sound you want in a horn. It might not work well for orchestral music but for other styles it could be very nice. The Olds line were exceptionally well made instruments. I don't think I would pay much more than the present price, however. If it goes over $800 bucks it'd wait until the next ocean wave rolls in.

Larry,
I considered the overhaul factor when I bought it. There is another one on ebay at this time that looks to be original. It could probably be had for less. But I took a chance hoping this to be original. I considered the case too. From my very limited experience it looks to be an Olds case. It looks in very good shape with little wear. A gig bag could have been used with the horn most of its life and of course a refurbished horn can be placed in a newer case. I'm am a skeptic. But when looking at a low milage car look at the gas pedal. If it has a lot of wear then something is fishy. I figured if the horn had a ratty case and shiny laquer it would be refurbished. The opposite may also be true. I took a gamble but if i don't like the horn for whatever reason (I've been playing a Yamaha Z lately so brightness isn't an issue with me) I think I can come close to getting my money back. Of course I'm hoping it is so fun to play it'll be a keeper.
Tim

Nice to see everyone is back, I was going through TrumpetHerald withdrawals.
Hey Tim, I guess you see someone scooped up that other Recording with ‘Buy it Now’.

Tim, I almost jumped into the bidding.
My original Recording is most likely a brother to this one. Same Province (Saskatchewan), same vintage (early '60s). And you are correct about the case it is the original.
My 'new' Recording is the same vintage as yours(382XXX) and I had it overhauled by Borodi Music near Cleveland.
I 'love' my Recording more that the other of my Olds 'family'.

Let us know when it arrives . . . give it a couple days and give us a report, alright?
