Is that really upgrading?
I think the difference is only for colour of sound, not quality... _________________ Scherzer 8211 Bb

I have an aluminum Tom Crown. I have never played the copper mute, however, I had a copper Harmon mute. I thought it was very hard to play and added weight to the bell. I really had to push to get a sound. I'm wondering if the copper Tom Crown would have the same charactoristics. _________________ Dan

I'm curious about the copper or brass bottom straight mutes as well. What tonal difference is there if any from the aluminum straights? And are they heavy like the copper bubbles or more manageable? |

Re: weight of copper mutes
My DAUGHTER doesn't have a problem with the weight. If you find the weight a problem, the muscles you build could be a good thing!
No doublt it is significantly heavier. |

I play both a tom crown all aluminum and a tom crown all copper.
My sectionmates use Wicks, so for tutti sections I play my aluminum for a blend with the Wick mutes, but for solos I often prefer the copper. The sound has more core, and it's much more usable for lyrical playing than the aluminum. I also find that my copper mute can be much louder than my aluminum. For really mutey stuff like Respighi and whatnot, the aluminum is the way to go though.
I think the copper compliments the aluminum, doesn't replace it.
But in my opinion, play no less than three of the same mute before you decide which one to purchase.
Happy hunting! |

Softcase,
I agree, the Tom Crown aluminum matches the Wick mute very well. Thanks for the info on the copper. I think its interesting that the copper is louder. The copper Harmon has a very cool sound but I don't think it is louder and It doesn't blend with the aluminum or Wick Harmons. |
