This is a really weird thing that has happened to me in the last week or so. I feel like I strained my voice or something. It feels like the back of my tongue is sore or strained. I think this may have been caused by over exertion from doing too much flexibility study (like in the Collin book) or articulation studies. Or both. The longer I play throughout any given day, the more it is sore.
Has this type of thing happened to anyone else?
What can I do about it? |

Continues playing per say won't cause the tongue or throat to hurt. You're doing something wrong. Do you have a teacher you can consult? If this persist for more than a week go see a doctor. Something is not right. _________________ Bob Grier

Turns out, I have pharyngitis which just about explains everything. I'm on antibiotics now. Should be ok in a few days. |

Get well soon! If it's a bacterial infection than your horn is infected. You need to sterilize it. E mail me and I'll send you my trumpet maintenance paper which tells you how to sterilize the horn. If you don't clean you'll just get reinfected. _________________ Bob Grier

Bob, that would be great. Thank you.
I just started the antibiotics yesterday and even today things were much better. I had a performance with my school's Frank Zappa ensemble and my playing was at about 75-80% of my ability whereas the last few days may have been around 30-40%. |

Sterilizing the trumpet after a pharyngitis
because
a relapse could be caused by trumpet playing - are you sure ? _________________ playing trumpet is like meditation

That's not what I meant at all. Pharyngitis was causin the problems that I thought were caused by strain or overuse. I just didn't know I was sick for a few days. I know that playing didn't cause the illness. |

Bacteria infections love to live inside the trumpet. If it's not cleaned and sterilized , playing the horn will re infect you. _________________ Bob Grier
