You do not play the case, you play the instrument. If an instrument has an unusual shape but great sound, you make a custom case. Otherwise, we all would be playing pocket trumpets. |

I make those.
My wife plays cello... so I made the first (of several) to play duets with her. _________________ Schagerl "Gansch" Vienna Trumpet Schagerl "Gansch" Horsdorf Heavy

I have owned both the Getzen and Kanstul 4 valve flugels and tried out a Courtois at one point. While the Getzen does have a big fat sound, the Kanstul wins on every other point - response, intonation, general ease, etc. Alternate fingerings and some experimentation are needed to get the lower notes in tune, but that register responds much better than on the Getzen or Courtois. I found the low register on the Courtois to be stuffy and not really useable.

I have an old, 4-valve Mirafone flugel. Others who have tried it did not really like it (said it was stuffy) but it does fine for what I need it to do. (It could stand to be "reinvigorated")
Now tk1031's flugel is more than an instrument; it is a work of art. And, like any art fancier than a painting of Elvis on velvet, it is outta my league...

PS - anyone know how to translate a Mirafone serial number into a date of manufacture? This flugel has a 7xx serial. |

The copper version, with conical Zirnbauer valves. Being used in a legit setting. _________________ Schagerl "Gansch" Vienna Trumpet Schagerl "Gansch" Horsdorf Heavy

Many say the 1525 Kanstul flugelhorn is the best out. Personally I would have to agree. Never even wanted a flugelhorn until I played one. It plays itself with spot on intonation. All this being said to make the point that Kanstul makes a 4valve flugelhorn. _________________ Steve

I'm assuming that Kanstul got the 4th slide length correct. The illustrated horn on the Web site has a configuration very much like my Courtois. It would be great to buy a local maker, Kanstul's flugels play great. |

Hi,
I'm from Ohio. That is in the USA, I just happen to live outside the USA right now. All of my materials come from the USA (and I am working with a great guy named Charles at Kanstul to bring more business to them). When I am in the USA I make instruments there.
I like Zig's stuff. I like Kanstul, but I like my own stuff. I make for Americans (and everybody else). My stuff is made by an American. No employee of my company is not an American. I am an 18 year veteran COP. I am doing this because the small towns I have worked for are going under, and I chose to live with my wife who works for an American company over here. My brother is a 12 year veteran Firefighter. He cleans chimneys on the side. Because in America they don't pay their Cops, Fireman, or Military enough.
By all means buy a Kanstul Flugelhorn, that company has one of the last of the great old brass designers is it.
I get a little sensitive when I see the flag being waved around. Those of you that have served in the Military, or Civil Service especially if you have been wounded in the line of duty and/or had to play taps for a fallen comrade might know what I mean. If it makes you feel better, I'll beg Zig, and Charlie for a little bench space next time I visit. Just say'n. _________________ Schagerl "Gansch" Vienna Trumpet Schagerl "Gansch" Horsdorf Heavy

I should amend that to say I get some materials from Germany also. Quality is quality. _________________ Schagerl "Gansch" Vienna Trumpet Schagerl "Gansch" Horsdorf Heavy
