What are your opinions about the different variations of bell models available for the Bach C trumpet? Do the 229, 239, 256, G, H, etc. all maintain that characterstic "Bach sound?" Just curious to hear some thoughts....

I have a 229H bell on my Bach and love it. It definitely has the "Bach sound". My horn seems to be a bit more stable and richer in tone than other Bach Cs I have played. I can't comment on the other options.
Just my two cents. |

All the above bells have the characteristic "Bach" sound, but the most popular these days is the 229. I also like the 229G, which seems to have a slightly warmer sound than the regular 229. The 239 is a little smaller than the 229, giving more brilliance and less breadth to the sound, but usually has better intonation. The 256 is even larger than the 229.
Bach used to make other C trumpet bells. I've played a couple of Mt Vernon 238 bells that were wonderful. Once on Ebay there was a 243 bell ML C trumpet. Has anyone ever tried one of those?

I purchased a cutom made Bach C tuning bell with both the 239GH and a 229GH.
both bells are very good. I can tell a big difference after recording with both.
I also purchased a 256 in Sterling and it is the best of the bunch. |

Hi, I have a question. "229- Tighter and brighter sounding than the 239. Sound doesn't spread as much to the sides and the 239...the sound is more direct and focused" , and "239- Big, Dark, Sound. Considered the "37" bell of for C and D trumpets. The so-called "Standard." These quotes are from the Bach Loyalist web-page; http://www.thebachloyalist.freeservers.com/canddbellchart.html. Did you get it backwards?
Thanks,
Robert |

Here is what a Bach catalog from the 1980s says:
239 (Standard C): Rich, big, dark sound.
229: Tends to be slightly broader than 239.
To my eye, a 229 bell flares much sooner than the 239.

Hi,
The Bach catalog also describes the 43 Bb bell to be "broader" than the 37. I always thought that the 43 had a smaller bell throat than the 37; just like I thought that the 229 had smaller bell throat than the 239. Is this also incorrect?
Thanks,
Robert |
